Military logistics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The word "logistics" is derived from the Greek adjective logistikos meaning "skilled in calculating." The first administrative use of the word was in Roman and Byzantine times when there was a military administrative official with the title Logista.
Research indicates that its first use in relation to an organized military administrative science was by the French writer, Antoine-Henri Jomini, who, in 1838, devised a theory of war on the trinity of strategy, ground tactics, and logistics.
Their judgments must be based not only upon professional knowledge of the numerous aspects of logistics itself but also upon an understanding of the interplay of closely related military considerations such as strategy, tactics, intelligence, training, personnel, and finance.

A New Paradigm for 21st Century Military Logistics
The logistics system, first and foremost, is designed to support combatants, and new warfighting concepts underscore the need for an alteration of the relationship between the materials command and subordinate combatant units to maximize sustenance to the battlespace commander.
During operations, the logistics system will need to maintain adequate supplies of technologies and components, balancing the cost of carrying inventories against the potential for military defeat due to weapon system/munition stock-out.8 The logistics system is also largely responsible for technology security.
Logistics in the 21st century will be intensely computerized, significantly reducing the extent of human intervention and decision-making.

The United States Military Logistics in the First Part of the Korean War, Chapter 1: Introduction, by Max Hermansen,
In military terms, the most including definition, is an excluding one; saying that logistics is everything except from the fighting itself.
Logistics is then the function of keeping track of what you have got where, and the issue of these supplies.
The reason for this is probably found in the fact that logistics did not become a really important part of wars before the second half of the 19th century.
