Norfolk Island (Norfuk: Norfuk Ailen) is a small inhabited island in the Pacific Ocean located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia, and along with two neighbouring islands forms one of Australia's external territories.
Norfolk Island was first settled by East Polynesian seafarers, either from the Kermadec Islands north of New Zealand, or from the North Island of New Zealand.
In 1920 the Mission was relocated from the island to the Solomon Islands to be closer to its target population.

Norfolk Island’s first commemorative stamps, issued on 8 June 1956, were of particular historical significance as they marked the centenary of the landing of the Pitcairners.

Norfolk’s isolation was one of the major reasons for its second settlement (1825–55) – as a prison rather than a productive island, described officially as “a place of the extremest punishment short of death”.
Norfolk Island was again abandoned in 1855, but this time the buildings remained and were used a year later during the third settlement, which consisted of 194 Pitcairn Islanders (the entire population of the island), who left behind their overcrowded conditions to establish a new life elsewhere.
