Ironically, the increase in the number of military police companies resulted in a weakening in the strength of all military police companies in the AEF, because Pershing was forced to cut down on the size and number of divisional military police units in order to provide trained manpower for the new units.
To perform military police responsibilities in the field, the War Department authorized larger military police units, with the battalion (later in the war it changed to group) prescribed as the largest unit in higher headquarters.

As the war drew to and end and the South was occupied, the duties of the provost marshals expanded from strictly military discipline to include law enforcement in the occupied territories and the administration of government functions, thereby becoming the first American forces engaged in military government.
Military police units distinguished themselves in combat on a number of occasions, in addition to their normal duties; but on Armistice Day, the Corps was once again disbanded, although individual MP units continued to operate until the Army ended its occupation of Germany.
All functions of a professional police force were in place by the end of the war, plus those functions unique to police in the military.

OTTAWA (CP) - The civilian watchdog over the military police announced Friday that it will investigate allegations that Canadian soldiers may have roughed up detainees in Afghanistan and that their misdeeds were ignored by police.
"The possible abuse of defenceless persons in (military) custody, regardless of their actions prior to apprehension, and the possibility that military police members may have knowingly or negligently failed to investigate such abuse and may otherwise have failed to follow proper protocols for the treatment of detainees, are matters of serious concern."
Attaran said there are hints in the documents that the military police didn't bother to investigate the injuries and took procedural shortcuts to hustle the men out of Canadian hands and into the custody of Afghan authorities.
