Their works, which often portray an intelligent, charismatic leader armed with ultra-futuristic brawn and who isn't afraid to bend or even break the rules when the rules get in the way, are the type onto which adolescent boys can project themselves and their fantasies.
While it is a classic sf novella, the lack of technology, fantasy feel, and lack of a traditional type of enemy might deter one from associating it with military sf.
Although not known for producing military sf, Cherryh is a writer of considerable note, and in "The Scapegoat" it's easy to see why she has a large following.

Although I've been a fan of military science fiction books for a while, this was my first introduction of David Drake.
The aliens then utilize the military prowess of the Romans to subjugate other low-tech planets (it seems that a galactic league of some sort prohibits the use of hi-tech force aginst primitives!).
Add his knowledge of military tactics, and his skill at making belivable science fiction settings and what you get is a great novel you should try to get no matter how old the copy or how much it costs!

In considering my personal military sf experiences, I do wonder if hardcore military sf folks wouldn't consider it "lite" military sf as the scenes are relatively quick and are not as detailed and drawn out as, say, the Ringo books.
David Drake is often considered the quintessential military sf author, something to which I cannot attest since I have not read anything by him.
Still, if you ignore the details, the military SF style and atmosphere is pretty good, at least until the end of the series when he starts to get too metaphysical.
