  ORB Online Encyclopedia--
According to St. Bernard, in his treatise De laude novae militiae, written in the 1130s, the Templars were "a new species of knighthood, unknown in the secular world," who waged a double conflict against both flesh and blood and against the invisible forces of evil.
Militia Dei (1145) consolidated the Order's independence of the local clerical hierarchy by giving the Templars the right to take tithes and burial fees and to bury their dead in their own cemeteries.
As these privileges indicate, during the 1130s the Temple had attracted increasing numbers of donors, for it proved to be especially popular with that sector of the French aristocracy which, while it could not aspire to comital status, nevertheless held castles and estates and could mobilise vassals, albeit on a modest scale.

Municipality of Cremona - TOURIST INFORMATION - The Militia Loggia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
While the image of the historical city was characterized by the pre-eminence of the Guelphs, the ancient "Società dei Militi", though transformed and undermined by the "Società del Popolo" in the supremacy of the Commune, maintained its prerogatives as a military and social body.
The "Loggia dei Militi" assumes the layout of the early Lombardy broletto, characterized by two single halls one over the other: the portico at ground level and the chamber above with a windowed roof, both floors being of a rectangular plan.
Under the portal there is preserved the emblem of Cremona (brought here from the Margherita gate, demolished in 1910) composed of the two statues of Hercules, the legendary and mythical founder of the city, holding up the city's coat of arms.

Papal bull - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The bull's format began with one-line in tall elongated letters containing three elements: the pope's name, the pope's title (episcopus servus servorum Dei), and a phrase indicative of the bull's purpose for record keeping purposes (the incipit), from which the bull would also take its name.
There has never been an exact distinction of usage between a bull and a brief, but nowadays most letters, including Papal encyclicals, are issued as briefs.
Today, the bull is the only written communication in which the pope will address himself as episcopus servus servorum Dei, meaning "Bishop, Servant of the Servants of God." For instance, Benedict XVI, when he issues a decree in bull form, will begin the document with Benedictus, Episcopus, Servus Servorum Dei.

 An hypothesis about conflicting evidence
Opus Dei is very much classical in its culture and its theology is stricly orthodox and thomist in the classical sense.
Because of the dangers of masochism, the traditional Catholic teaching on this sort of mortification is that it be done under obedience to a spiritual director.
On the other hand, it is likely that an Opus dei director may think that a vocation, with all the means of eternal salvation, is authentic, and that it may be put into jeopardy by a natural family.
