"Milk Man" contains the most legible lyrics of the album, and their sentiment sets a tone for the album that matches very well with the Deerhoof sound; that is, abducting children.
Milk Man sees them at their most consistently entertaining, but also their most refined; their novelty has taken a far back seat to their overwhelming pleasantness and musical talent.
Milk Man occupies a strange world, one that rains Skittles that sting when they fall on you but people dance in them anyway because they taste so good and everyone sings to the sun and wears magic shoes and also they use words like "rumpus" and "bippy" in everyday conversation.

Sponic Zine - Music Reviews - Deerhoof   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
On Milk Man this intuitive and playful creativity manifests in a manner that may, at certain points, be missed altogether if one expects to be kicked in the gut as they have been by ‘hoof in the past.
It tells the story of a “Milk Man” who, with bananas eerily stabbed into his arms, awakens from his daytime slumber atop the collective roof of children everywhere (having the same omnipresence as the Boogieman) and, under the cover of nightfall, sneaks into their houses.
Milk Man is no exception, except that here they are not just subtle accents but often the foundations of the structures themselves.

The vision and the visuals surrounding the album are a perfect fit with Deerhoof [+]'s music, and, perhaps befitting Milk Man [+]'s status as a concept album, this time around the band incorporates more prog rock-like keyboards and other electronics into its sound.
Milk Man [+] does have its fair share of noise, particularly on the instrumentals "Rainbow Silhouette of the Milky Rain" and "That Big Orange Sun Run Over Speed Light," as well as on "Song of Sorn," which starts out as a burst of noise and ends up oddly, but distinctly, poppy.
But even in its louder moments, Milk Man [+] is a surprisingly subtle album, and one that takes Deerhoof [+]'s music in quietly exciting new directions.

 Deerhoof: Milk Man (2004): Reviews
Milk Man is representative of just about everything the band does best: the melodies soar, bend, and crunch; the verse seems interminably driven by its own internal logic; and the band’s members still play with a near-telepathic singularity of thought.
So horribly untrendy it’s a new-fl must-have, ‘Milk Man’ is the essential oddity of 2004, and a more-than-worthy successor to 2003’s magnificent ‘Apple O’’.
Even in its louder moments, Milk Man is a surprisingly subtle album, and one that takes Deerhoof's music in quietly exciting new directions.

The fact that man's capacity to breastfeed is left largely unrealised in our society has far-reaching theoretical and practical implications and may be seen to reveal a great deal about our culture.
The chapter includes a passage written by a man in Australia who nursed his daughter until she was a year old.
Subjects include: cooking with breastmilk (there are several recipes in the back of the book), breastfeeding triplets, donating milk to a milkbank after the death of a child, adult nursing, inducing lactation for an adopted child, lactation pornography, as well as more conventional topics such as weaning an older child, and dealing with mastitis.

Still, no matter how much Milk Man is generally in keeping with its predecessors structurally, the band shows evidence of introducing even more textural variation into their mix.
In the end, whether or not the band may be playing on the edges of conventionality is hardly relevant; the strengths of the music are as rooted in the pop aesthetic as they are the avant-garde, and we can hardly begrudge the band's tinkering with the formula in such characteristic ways.
