Shorthorns, the most numerous in the British Isles, America and Australia, are either red, red and white, white or roan, the last named color being a very close mixture of red and white, and found in no other breed of cattle.
Milking Shorthorns were declared a dairy breed in 1969 and in 1972 became members of the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association.
Milking Shorthorn breeders in the USA have many opportunities for improving the genetics of their animals by participating in the breed's official production testing, type trait appraisal, gain performance, national shows and breed promotion programs.

Shorthorn cattle have the distinction of being the breed which were not only the first cattle to be introduced into New Zealand but which have been here continuously ever since – almost two centuries.
Shorthorn herds were well established by the early 1840s, and for a long time they remained New Zealand's most popular cattle breed, although quite early on in this country the development of specialized beef and dairy Shorthorns was commenced.
The Milking Shorthorn (as it became known) predominated in New Zealand's dairy industry until the 1920s when it was superseded by the Jersey.

“Milking Shorthorn breeders have been asking for this opportunity, and we are proud to make it available,” says W.R. Watt Jr., president and manager of the 106-year-old Stock Show.
“We are very excited about adding the Milking Shorthorn breed, and we believe the show will attract breeders from neighboring states,” says Ron Woolley, superintendent for the Milking Shorthorn Show and a district director with the Texas Cooperative Extension.

Most of our Shorthorns are polled but with new genetics coming into the stud some animals can have horns, we do not cull these out but put them into our commercial mob.

They were then the 3rd generation showing Milking Shorthorn Cattle, but they've all moved to cities and we no longer have cattle.
