Milkmaid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A milkmaid is historically a woman, usually young, who milked cows and supplied milk.
In previous centuries, before vaccination became common, milkmaids were sometimes cited as the example of someone with good skin.
Elizabeth I is quoted as saying to one of her attendants, “That milkmaid’s lot is better than mine, and her life merrier,” in 1554 during her imprisonment as princess, in which she heard a milkmaid singing while working.

Local lore suggests the Phantom Milkmaid is the ghost of Saaryl Vilantor, a maiden of Red Larch whose first visit to Waterdeep ended in tragedy.
Many once believed the Phantom Milkmaid only appeared on nights of the full moon within 200 yards of one of the gates of Waterdeep, but others have reported seeing the ghost along the roadside, heading toward them for safety.
Three local ballads of the "Phantom Milkmaid and the Gallant Guard" (or related titles) describe the bloody end of the young man. Just as the ghost's cloak tore from her shoulders as normal, the guard's horse bucked in terror, and the horse, guard, and ghostly shawl were each torn into four gory quarters.

 Goya - MIlkmaid of Bordeaux
The problem with the Milkmaid of Bordeaux is basically the problem of Goya's very late style, as I see it.
Many of the compositional and stylistic anomalies, observed by Juliet Wilson Bareau in her essay about the Milkmaid, can be found in the late etching of 'The Blind Guitarist,' which is a very odd work but its authenticity is rarely if ever questioned.
Goya included the churn in the left-hand corner as a symbol with which to identify his sitter, the milkmaid.

The Norman milkmaids stand apart from Millet's other images of French peasant women performing daily and seasonal labors, because of their unusual specificity, which is indicated both by the paintings' titles and their iconography.
The milkmaid is an icon of French popular culture that has long signified the region of Normandy both to outsiders and to Normans.

Thomas Hardy's Novella The Romantic Adventures of a Milkmaid (1883)
Clearly, The Romantic Adventures of a Milkmaid fails to conform to one of the most common expectations of a short story, namely that it is of such a length that it may be read at a single sitting.
However, in The Romantic Adventures of a Milkmaid (1883) Hardy has created a foreshortened novel comparable in its unity of setting, conflict, and character to Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr.
