 channel4.com - Time Team - Arkwright's mill, Manchester - text only
Arkwright's factories were built to a regular plan and records from the time of its construction provided the Team with the basic dimensions and layout.
Arkwright's factory had been completely burnt down and rebuilt in 1850 and the bricks originally used by Arkwright could have been reused on numerous occasions as the site was developed and altered over the years.
Further excavation revealed that the row of central columns was also from this first factory but the records from the time, describing the factory as 30 feet wide, were wrong; in fact, the factory was 40 feet wide.

  The Woolen Mill History 1889
From its beginnings in 1894, servicing local sheepherders, to knitting socks for the doughboys in Europe, the Frankenmuth Woolen Mill has served its Country and Community for over one-hundred years.
Lean profits from the seasonal operation turned Ranke's thoughts to building a wool processing mill at the rear of the Cider Mill.
For the next 54 years, local farmers would bring in their sour apples and grapes to be made into cider as well as wool to be processed into the necessary items families needed to make it through Michigan's harsh winters.

Reading Habits: New England Mill Girls
Most of the mill girls were native to the New England states, and they came from all walks of life, some being orphans and the rest the daughters of teachers, sea captains, ministers, doctors, businessmen, and especially farmers.
Nonetheless, many mill girls continued reading novels--and indeed many other kinds of books--"to improve our minds."[17] Furthermore, in line with their established thirst for knowledge, Robinson said the factory women read the weekly newspapers and other periodicals in order to stay abreast of public events and issues.
Since the working days were so long, a mill girl's total daily leisure time consisted of a maximum of three hours, and arguably less depending on the time of year, the distance she must walk from the mill to her boarding house, and the promptness of her evening meal.

 The Factory Act, 1833
The earliest 'factories' were places provided by an employer to execute the work of spinning and weaving through the utilization of water power to a mill-wheel.
The proliferation of such factories and knowledge of the working conditions therein, prompted many persons of humanitarian bent to attempt to correct the abuses that were the natural concomitant of unregulated labor.
Not until 1847, however, was the general workday for women and children in textile factories set at ten hours, though another thirty years were to pass before that benefit was extended to labor in all factories and workshops.

This 1888 photograph shows Beers grist mill which was built along a rocky gorge of the Pequonnock, which was fed by a dammed section of the river called Sawmill pond.
Upon the closing of the Toucey Factory, the plant was converted to a witch hazel factory and an addition was eventually added to its east side.
The beautiful goldfish pond that was in front of the factory was then filled in, and now a vacant lot sometimes used as a storage site by the public works department is all that is left of the site where an underwear factory and later a witch hazel factory once stood.

After the disastrous fire of 1881, by which the whole mill was wiped from the face of the ground, it was rebuilt upon a new and improved plan, with its capacity more than doubled, the new factory having facilities for turning out 6,000 kegs of nails per week.
The factory will be of the most modern construction, built entirely of iron, and will leave nothing to be desired in a factory of its kind.
Its new factory will be completed inside of another month, and it may then be counted upon to still further extend the fame of the Nail City and her products.

 Trenton Historical Society, New Jersey
Sartori (1765-1853), the son of a jeweler to the Pope, was born in Rome and emigrated to Philadelphia in 1793.
The “old” weaving mill, on the north bank of the Assunpink, lay directly across the creek from the gristmill, and was powered by a short headrace that drew water form the millpond at the northern end of the milldam.
Ultimately, the increasing intensity of mill development and industrial water power usage in the downtown, which reached a peak in the mid-19th century, along with the inexorable outward spread of urban Trenton, greatly increased the susceptibility of the Assunpink to flooding, a factor that was to hasten the demise of the Eagle Factory.

 Millburn Township - History
Millburn Township was once part of Elizabethtown and Newark settlements in New Jersey, created by a grant from Charles II to his brother James in 1664.
The first inhabitants, the Lenape Indians, beat trails around these small or 'short' hills; streams cascading through them fueled colonial mills and 19th century factories; the railroad was built at the base of their slopes; and developers of suburban homes found knolls and uneven terrain attractive building sites.
Most of the early mills were paper mills, among them the Diamond Mill, now the site of the Paper Mill Playhouse, but hat mills eventually became dominant.

The Bowl Mill ... Wooden Salad Bowls
On the site of the "Bowl Mill" we have restored the old farmhouse, built in the 1830’s and used for many years to domicile the Bowl Mill employees, into our retail store.
Before the farmhouse was remodeled we sold a few bowls out of the cull barn because we found that once people had toured the mill and seen the bowl being turned, they wanted to buy one to take home.
The Bowl Mill Factory Rejects are unfinished bowls that do not "make the grade." Many people spend hours sorting through the piles of hardwood bowls to find the bowl in the size and hardwood species that makes it special to them.

DALE CITY, Va.--To dispel any notion that factory outlet stores are piperack outfits operating out of grimy, red-brick factories in dying mill towns, a visit to the Potomac Mills Mall should suffice.
In another similarity to full-price malls, Potomac Mills features anchor stores, none of which are factory outlets: IKEA, the home furnishings store that features knockdown Scandinavian furniture, the Sears Outlet Store, largest of 109 Sears surplus units, a Cohoes off-price apparel store and Waccamaw Pottery, an off-price, Southern-based chain of housewares stores.
Potomac Mills, about 20 minutes south of Washington D.C., is 11 miles from the nearest full-price mall in Springfield, Va., so the manufacturers avoid competing face to face with their department and discount store accounts.
