The Mill Brook Watershed was Riverways first Lake Watershed Stewardship pilot.  This "linked-lakes" project in the Mill Brook Watershed, Riverways worked with the Indian Lake Watershed Association, the Mill Brook Task Force and the Blackstone Headwaters Coalition to bring together residents interested in protecting area waterbodies.
As Riverways presented the award, we noted that as the first pilot, the Mill Brook survey was both the most physically complex we would likely attempt, but that we benefited greatly from the network of cooperation between citizens and city officials, particularly the importance of the attendance of municipal partners at the action planning meeting.
Members of the Mill Brook Watershed Stewards are implementing their action plan in conjunction with efforts to implement the 319 Grant-funded projects for Indian Lake and Salisbury Pond, under the guidance of the Indian Lake Watershed Association and the Mill Brook Task Force.

The Advocate reported that "Mill Brook came to within inches of overflowing its banks." Approximately 150 cellars had to be pumped by the Fire Department.
Mill Brook suffered little flooding but approximately 150 homes had to have their cellars pumped.

The first mill on the Brook in Menotomy, or the Northwest Precinct of Cambridge (now Arlington), was the earliest water powered gristmill within the limits of colonial Cambridge.
Massachuset tribe ceded all the lands of her tribe, excepting her homestead (which was bounded on the east by the Mystic Lakes and on the south by Mill Brook), to the English Puritan settlers of Cambridge, for "twenty and one coates, ninten fathom of wampom, and three bushels of corne".
In 1827, Mary Cutter, the widow of Stephen Cutter, granted land abutting the Mill Pond to the Baptist Society "for the erection of a meeting house with the privilege of using so much of the mill pond as necessary for the ordinance of baptism." Sylvia Brazy was baptized on 3 June 1827.

Mill Brook salt marsh had been degraded by man-made ditches and upland land uses.
Ditches were first constructed in the 1600s to facilitate the growth of salt hay by farmers, and additional ditches were dug in the 1960s, in a misguided attempt to reduce mosquito populations.
Mill Brook now sees the regular tidal wettings needed for vigorous and diverse salt marsh vegetation communities to grow and for the saltwater pools on the surface of the marsh to be refreshed.
