Cumberland County was formed in 1750, ending Lancaster County's farflung western territory; Berks' creation in 1752 further reduced Lancaster County and in 1772 the formation of Northumberland County took away the northern tip.
By 1734, James Hamilton, proprietor of Lancaster town and son of the distinguished lawyer Andrew Hamilton, won a seat in the Assembly and became the political leader of the county.
Nearly 300 flour (grist) mills operated on county streams and limeburners were employed busily producing lime for soil dressing in southern Lancaster County and neighboring counties and states.

Adams, the northwest corner township of Hamilton County, was set apart by the Board of Commissioners in November, 1833, and, due to the limited population of this and the adjoining township of Jackson, the two were temporarily united for jurisdiction.
In the year 1822, Hamilton County was formed, and owing to the lack of facilities at the present county seat (Noblesville), the first session of the Board of Commissioners (or Justices) was held at the house of William CONNER, in Delaware Township.

The Mill Creek Greenway is multi-objective, and incorporates the public process into all phases of its development and vision for a 28-mile long series of greenway trails; beginning in Butler County, traveling through the heart of the region to the confluence of Mill Creek and the mighty Ohio River.
Butler County is working with elected officials, county/city staff, citizens and business owners to establish eco-friendly zoning and regulatory incentives that improve water quality in the headwaters region of Mill Creek and along the East Fork tributary.
Springfield Township is also working on organizing a citizen’s group to connect with Mill Creek Greenway implementation of the Caldwell-Seymour Greenway Trail, to improve walking connections to Winton Woods along the upper West Fork tributary of Mill Creek, and to design ecological and recreational improvements to Warder Nursery near Finneytown.

THOMAS P., of Mill Creek Township, was born in Cumberland County, Va. On his father's side he is of Irish and Scotch descent, the family having emigrated to this country, locating first in the State of Delaware, and subsequently moved to Virginia.

Soon after the close of the war he moved to Lewis county, Kentucky, where the subject of this sketch grew to manhood, with such education as could be derived from the county schools of that day, a log school house, with dirt floor, puncheon seats and greased paper for window glass.
In 1872, he was elected county judge of Johnson county, and served for 10 consecutive years in that office, declining to longer serve, on account of the labor of the office, and his advanced age.
