In the symbiotic relationship between mill owners and their neighbors, farmers were frequently given the right to use water from mill ponds to irrigate cultivated fields or mowing lots during the months when sawmills were least likely to operate.
By turning the brook, relocating the mill, and creating a sizable mill pond capable of storing more water than the original Marsh millseat, Edward and John Phillips greatly increased the potential running time of their sawmill.
Several of the woodlots owned by the Wights were a few miles from their Quinebaug mill; one was situated in the northwestern part of Sturbridge near the Brookfield line, another near Walker Pond in the northeastern portion of town and a third in the rough and remote southeastern hills surrounding Breakneck Brook.

Historically: How to Site a Mill
Mill ponds situated in narrow valleys must be backed up a considerable distance in order to impound sufficient water for the daily mill operation.
The vertical mill wheel made it necessary to build a gear system to change the horizontal rotation of the main shaft into a vertical motion that could be used inside the mill to power the millstones.
Mill sites are more numerous and sharply defined in hilly terrain and in the upper portions of a river system than in lower valleys with gentler slopes and a typically sedentary character.

Temporary ponds that dry up for part of the year are included in this group, as are garden ponds and ponds in public parks which are now both recognised as valuable refuge habitats for amphibians.
Shrubby cover around the pond is an essential part of the habitat for amphibians and dragonflies, both of which breed in ponds but spend most of their lives on land.

The proliferation of "dry ponds" as a method to manage stormwater in Fairfax County has been successful in providing a solution for flood control and, in some cases, pollution treatment.
The dry ponds currently so popular in the County also can be costly due to the cost of frequent mowing and increased maintenance.
While the initially low cost of building a dry pond may be inviting to some, it would be hard to argue that they are artistic pieces of landscaping.

A map of the Parker River mills from 1807 shows that there were four grist mills along the stretch of river between the falls at Central St. and River Street in Byfield.
Unfortunately, although these mills provided important services to the communities in which the were located, they also had a significant impact on the rivers and streams next to which they were located.
The rivers were typically used as a dumping ground for both human and industrial waste and the dams blocked the migration of anadromous fish that came into the rivers each spring to spawn.

 Coonamessett River History
Philip Dexter located Falmouth’s first grist mill at the mouth of the river around 1700, as the Coonamessett was one of the few rivers with enough water flow to power a waterwheel.
By 1795, there were three mills along the Coonamessett, causing a decline in the native anadromous fisheries in the river.
The fall off in the herring population along the Coonamessett sparked years of heated conflict between mill interests and fishery proponents and is popularly known as the “herring war.” It started in 1798 with a bylaw passed at Town Meeting.

Due to inefficient milling processes, only about 80 percent of the lead and 50 percent of the zinc were removed from the crude ore; the rest remained in the mill tailings.
