Is Bill Clinton Afraid of Charles Millard?
Millard, a social liberal but fiscal conservative, has established an "independent" political persona during his tenure on the City Council.
Should Millard win, he would join a cluster of Republican moderates such as Bill Weld, Olympia Snowe, Arlen Specter and Christine Whitman who are at odds with fundamentalist groups seeking to influence the 1996 Republican Party Convention.
A Millard victory based on a mixture of upper- and working-class voters would be a signal of Democratic vulnerability in the Empire State.

Slant Magazine - Film Review: Thieves' Highway
In his family's sunny kitchen, Nick finds his bride-to-be Polly (Barbara Lawrence) disappointed with his china doll gift (until she spies the even-more expensive ring hanging from its arm) and his father legless due to an accident caused by underhanded San Francisco produce market kingpin Mike Figlia (a devious Lee J. Cobb, exuding small-time shadiness).
Bent on exacting revenge, Nick teams up with Ed (Millard Mitchell), a trucker currently tending to his dad's rig, and the duo hatch a two-killings-for-the-price-of-one plan to travel to Frisco, where they can simultaneously deliver a truckload of sweet, highly coveted apples and dish out some bitter payback to the rotten Figlia.
Breakneck close-ups of speedometers and spinning tires create a propulsive sense of inevitability, while Italian prostitute (and Figlia crony) Rica's (Valentina Cortese) comment that Nick's bloody neck wound looks "beautiful" speaks to hers (and, later, Nick's) reconciliation with life's pain and disappointment.

The Anthony Mann-Jimmy Stewart Westerns in the 1950s infused the genre with a psychological intensity and psychopathic edge.
Stewart is a hard, angry bounty hunter tracking outlaw Robert Ryan in this lean five-character drama set in the deceptively beautiful mountain wilderness of the Midwest.
Stewart finds himself saddled with two unwanted partners, sourdough prospector Millard Mitchell (his sidekick in the earlier Mann Western Winchester '73) and dishonorably discharged cavalry officer Ralph Meeker.

Up until Cobb's appearance, the film is solidly anchored by the also-underappreciated Richard Conte as Nico Garcos, a globetrotting mechanic whose jubilant return to his parents' home in California is spoiled when he discovers his truck-driver father lost his legs in a suspicious accident up north.
The culprit is the crooked Figlia, and Nico is sufficiently enraged to set off on a hazily planned revenge, which initially entails buying back his father's truck from the shady Ed (Millard Mitchell), a fruit hauler who has yet to make a single payment on the rickety auto.
Ed promises the money's forthcoming as soon as he reaps the windfall from a delivery of top-dollar golden delicious apples; Nico, whose thoughts are more immediately on vengeance rather than repossession, warily decides to pair up with Ed.

Despite the best efforts of an assistant D.A. (Brian Donlevy), Nick is forced to lay everything on the line to rescue his family's future.
The movie abounds in evocative texture, thanks to the no-frills excellence of Norbert Brodine's camerawork and an exemplary supporting cast including Millard Mitchell (as a sardonic police detective), Karl Malden (another D.A.), and Taylor Holmes (a flannel-mouthed Mob shyster).
The movie also features a number of actors who do excellent jobs, including Coleen Gray who loves and marries Bianco, Millard Mitchell and Karl Malden as two associates of Donlevy, and Taylor Holmes as Bianco's crook of a lawyer.
