  The Lost Villages Historical Society - Mille Roches
The village of Mille Roches was the closest community to Cornwall, until July 1, 1958.
The name Mille Roches, (meaning Thousand Rocks in French), referred to the rocky deposits of the Long Sault Rapids, or to the large limestone quarries to the north of the village.
Mille Roches was a typical community of the time, with Mille Roches Public School, St. George’s Roman Catholic Chapel, Mille Roches United Church, and Emmanuel Pentecostal Church being prominent buildings in the community.

Mille Roches' peak period of prosperity took place from 1890 to 1910 when the William Davis construction firm was hired to enlarge the Cornwall Canal.
The pride and joy of Mille Roches was the hockey and skating arena that officially opened on February 8, 1936.
Mille Roches belonged to a small hockey league, which included the nearby villages of Moulinette and Massena N.Y., on the opposite side of the river.

Catch statistics indicated that the stocks were being fished more heavily and a shift in the age distribution of the catch showed that the larger eels were being removed faster than they were being replaced by downstream migrants.

Mille Roches is described again in the 1878 “Belden” Atlas.
The author wrote “The only villages deserving of the name in (Cornwall Township) are Moulinette and Mille Roches, there being two villages of the latter name, the distinguishing prefix of “old” and “new” being applied to them.
While the population remained stable until the turn of the century, the press outdid themselves in praising the village.

The second launch was remarkably trouble free and in a few minutes we were cruising down the Tay River in Perth Ontario.
My grandfather was part of a team building river barges and the famous tug, The Mary I. Robertson which worked the St. Lawrence for many years near Brockville and eventually hauled sand for constuction use from Cornwall Island.
A lockkeepers strike in 2004 on the Rideau System in Ontario would keep us from logging many miles in our month, but did not dampen the enjoyment of living and cruising on the river.

Born in Mille Roches, Ontario to a successful Franco-Ontarian fabric manufacturer, Ault moved to Wisconsin in his teens, where he worked as a bookkeeper.
In 1958, 28 years after Ault's death, Sheek's Island and Ault's birthplace in Mille Roches were submerged by construction on the St.
With the help of Ault's surviving family, Ault Park was rebuilt on the new river shoreline near Long Sault, and is home to a historical museum commemorating The Lost Villages.

The settlements - Mille Roches, Aultsville, Dickinson's Landing, Moulinette, Wales, Farran's Point, Maple Grove, Santa Cruz, Woodlands, Sheik's Island - might have been forgotten by the rest of us, though, were it not for the Lost Villages Museum in Long Sault, about 90 minutes southwest of Montreal.
Mille Roches had a thriving limestone quarry; an Aultsville farmer imported the first Holstein cattle to Canada; such luminaries as Charles Dickens and Lord Simcoe visited Dickinson's Landing, founded by Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, the first European to travel the length of the Mississippi River.
Since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the dam is off limits, but the New York Power Authority, which shares the operation with Ontario Hydro, opened the visitor centre last summer as a substitute.

This area map was extracted from the Cornwall Township map that was published in Belden's Historical Atlas dated 1879.
The map clearly shows both the "Old" and "New" Mille Roches with the Cornwall Canal cutting through both parts of town.
The town's main road was severed and cut off during construction of the canal.
