  Television pilot at AllExperts
Some series (such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer) are given bare-bones pilots that are never intended to be shown to the public.
Series for which this has happened include the first Star Trek series, where the second, modified pilot ("Where No Man Has Gone Before") was aired as the third episode, and footage from the original pilot ("The Cage") was edited into newer footage to produce the two part episode "The Menagerie".
A backdoor pilot is a television movie, other TV special event, or even an otherwise normal episode of an already established series that is being used as a trial balloon—if audiences respond and ratings are good, the studio or network may order subsequent episodes from the creators.

Millennium (TV series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Millennium is a grim, suspenseful television series, produced by Chris Carter (creator of The X-Files), and set during the years leading up to the dawning of the new millennium.
Experienced genre actor Lance Henriksen headlined the series as investigator Frank Black, a freelance forensic profiler and former FBI agent with a unique ability to "see the world through the eyes" of serial killers and murderers, though he was not psychic.
Carter pitched Millennium to Fox as "Seven in Seattle." The setting of a dark, rain-soaked city and a world-weary detective's hunt for a religiously-inspired serial killer have clear parallels with the pilot episode.

One thing you'll notice right away is that Millennium is certainly not something you'd expect to see on television, especially when your first dose of it is it's extremely gorey, suggestive, and terrifying pilot episode.
As a member of the mysterious Millennium group, a shadowy panel of former law enforcement agents fighting a swell of crime and pre-millennium evil, Frank serves a purpose that is not just unclear to the viewer, it's positively opaque.
Millennium went on for three seasons, and, from what I vaguely remember, bounced around on the television schedule until it was finally cancelled back in 1999.
