  Halfbakery: Miller-Cycle Wankel
Miller cycles are up to about 10% more efficient than Otto cycles.
The Miller cycle is different from an Otto cycle because of the compression stroke.
Now with Miller cycles, the efficiency of the supercharger's compression wears off at high RPM since at that point the engine is more efficient at compressing the air than the supercharger.

Miller cycle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In engineering, the Miller cycle is a combustion process used in a type of four-stroke internal combustion engine.
Typically this would lead to losing some of the needed charge, but in the Miller cycle the piston in fact is over-fed with charge from a supercharger, so blowing a bit back out is entirely planned.
Thus the Miller cycle uses the supercharger for the portion of the compression where it is best, and the piston for the portion where it is best.

Atkinson cycle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Atkinson cycle engine is a type of Internal combustion engine invented by James Atkinson in 1882.
The Atkinson cycle allows the intake, compression, power, and exhaust strokes of the four-stroke cycle to occur in a single turn of the crankshaft.
The Atkinson cycle may also refer to a four stroke engine in which the intake valve is held open longer than normal to allow a reverse flow into the intake manifold.

 The Miller Cycle
Subaru plans to combine a Miller cycle flat-4 with a hybrid driveline for their "Turbo Parallel Hybrid." The traditional Otto cycle used four "strokes", of which two can be considered "high power" – the compression and power strokes.
To this end successful production versions of this cycle have typically used variable valve timing to "switch on and off" the Miller cycle when efficiency does not meet expectation.
Due to the reduced compression stroke of a miller cycle engine a higher over all compression ratio is possible, and therefore a miller cycle engine has a better efficiency.

He still used an intercooler, and still used the new high pressure turbo output, but he reduced the pressure and the temperature of the air charge by closing the intake valves before bottom dead center, thus bringing pressures down to normal values, and chilling the air to normal temperature as well.
Turbocharged spark-ignition gas engines were also fitted with the Miller system, but intake valve closure was retarded until after bottom dead center for good and sufficient reasons beyond the scope of this brief introduction.
Miller had an off-putting no-nonsense flavor to him, but when one got to know him well, he made great sense.

Halfbakery: Two Stroke Diesel Miller Cycle
Now while this saves two whole cycles, since the engine doesn't have a dedicated exhaust stroke, it requires a supercharger to scavenge the cylinder.
The intake valve is also connected to the supercharger, so when the valve opens the engine acheives the Miller Effect (increasing efficiency dramatically) but also higher cylinder pressure and lower required compression ratio (remember that diesels are compression ignition), meaning you get more out of your supercharger than was ever possible.
It strikes me that the difference between the Otto and Atkinson/Miller cycles is one of degree, and that there is a valve timing regime (cam grind, if you wish) where you wouldn't be able to decide which cycle applies.

Quasiturbine Problematic - HCCI Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition - SCCI Stratified Combustion
At low load factor, the intake depressurization of the Otto cycle dissipates power from the engine since the throttle valve is almost closed and the descending piston acts as a clogged vacuum pump against the atmospheric pressure, which vacuum is subsequently partially destroyed by fuel vaporization during the compression.
Due to this effect, the engine in Otto cycle opposes to all RPM revolution increase (well known as the engine compression braking) and this intrinsic resistance to speed augmentation is compensated by a constant and important fuel consumption.
For this reason, the efficiency at low load factor of the photo-detonation engine is twice that of the conventional Otto cycle, and considering that the load factor of a car is in average of about 10 to 15%, this is not a small difference (saving is still superior in traffic jams...).

Cost is a factor because the Miller Cycle requires a supercharger in the compression cycle.
The Miller cycle basically keeps the intake valves open into the compression stroke, closing them a bit after the piston rises from BDC.
The Miller Cycle is technically the same as the Otto Cycle except that a supercharger is used and the intake valve close timing is delayed so that the compression stroke starts with the piston compressing against the supercharger.

A naturally-aspirated, Miller cycle, Spark-Ignition (SI) engine that controls output with variable intake valve closure is compared to a conventionally-throttled engine using computer simulation.
The Miller Cycle engine can use late intake valve closure (LIVC) to control indicated output down to 35% of the maximum, but requires supplemental throttling at lighter loads.
The First Law analysis shows that the Miller cycle increases indicated thermal efficiency at light loads by as much as 6.3%, primarily due to reductions in pumping and compression work while heat transfer losses are comparable.
