 Millers Falls Company History
Millers Falls acquired the property in 1931 when it merged with the nearby Goodell-Pratt Company.
Formerly the chief fabrication facility for Goodell-Pratt, the Greenfield site served as Millers Falls Company headquarters from the time of its purchase until 1978, when all aspects of the operation were relocated to Deerfield, just three miles away.
This history of the Millers Falls Company is based on a mix of primary and secondary resources.

The jaws were kept from collapsing in on each other by a shelf of steel produced by the incomplete machining of the slot in the threaded core of the chuck that made room for the jaws.
As discussed on the Millers Falls page, this seminal design was dramatically improved upon just a year and a half later by Charles Amidon's "Improved Barber Chuck" (Oct 3, 1865).
This suggests the conjecture that the Millers Falls Co. may have sold limited rights to the original Barber patent to smaller and non-threatening companies, while reserving the "improved Barber" chuck for itself.

Their gear wipers resemble that of the Goodell-Pratt drill, but the Millers Falls version at least was never illustrated in any Millers Falls catalog.
The urn-shaped body cap of the illustrated Millers Falls No.104 (but not all 104's) is the one distinguishing feature that sets apart the Millers Falls No.104 drills from the Crane drills.
No other Millers Falls or any other manufacturers' drills share the chuck of these drills; the Goodell-Pratt drill is shown for comparison and shares none of the listed features except the similar gear wiper.

The bugle and drum corps organized in 1929 as a Boy Scout activity, was later sponsored by Belado-Crowley American Legion Post and is a long time member of the Massachusetts Fifiers and Drummers Assocation.
The history of the Miller Falls Drum Corp has not been recorded....or at least I haven’t found it.
The leadership names of the Millers Falls Drum Corp were Bartlett, Gould, Felton, Courier, Crouse....there are more that I have forgotten.I think it would be nice to have some historical information on the Corp. If you have any archival information on the Corp please let me know.

This tool, made by the Millers Falls Company of Greenfield and Millers Falls, Massachusetts, is known as a "bit brace drill." The design, which goes back thousands of years, relies on hand power to provide rotation of the drill bit and hand pressure to make it cut.
Tools like this, dating from the 1930's and 40's, were used to drill holes and drive screws in wood.
In 1928, while building the Garden Theater, in Greenfield, carpenter Fred Schmidt and three others spent a month drilling holes in the hardwood floors and screwing down 2,500 seats with this type of tool.

Shortly after 1900 The Stanley Rule and Level Company entered the bit brace business in a serious way, acquiring several companies to obtain patents, tooling, and workers with brace building experience.
While I have many braces that extend that limit (Stanley, Goodell-Pratt, Millers Falls, North Bros, McClellan, etc), they are treated more as curiosities than an integral part of my collection.
