Millibar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A millibar (mbar, also mb) is 1/1000th of a bar, a unit for measurement of pressure.
The millibar was introduced by Sir Napier Shaw in 1909, and internationally adopted in 1929.
The unit millibar is still used although official use is gradually changing to hPa which is the numerically equivalent SI unit.

A millibar (mb) is 1/1000th of a bar, a unit for measurement of pressure.
The SI unit is the pascal (Pa), with 1 millibar = 100 pascals (a hectopascal)
The millibar unit was introduced by Sir Napier Shaw in 1909, and internationally adopted in 1929.

FORECASTING USING THE 500 MILLIBAR CHART   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The 500 millibar chart represents the pressure level in about the middle of the atmosphere (about half the earth's atmospheric mass is below this level and half is above).
The 500 millibar chart is one of the best charts for studying the following: vorticity advection, the trough/ridge pattern, and shortwaves.
Positive vorticity (shown on 500 mb vorticity charts) is highest where the winds have to follow a curved counterclockwise path and areas with strong speed shear (wind speed increasing away from the center of a trough on the 500 millibar plane).

The temperature in the middle of the “critical layer” (at around 850 millibars) is just under 0°C. There is a layer of air near the surface that is above freezing, but it is not thick enough to allow falling snow enough time to melt.
Figure 2.1 This is plot of 850 millibar temperatures for the storm on January 19, 2001.
Used properly, the 850 millibar map is a good starting point in the quest to determine the fine line between rain and snow.

The Kevlar® Millibar® framing anchor may be used to resist those forces by anchoring the roof to the wall and the wall down to the foundation.
Since Kevlar® Millibar® has not been approved as a lateral wall bracing and roof uplift system, it cannot substitute for reinforced wall sheathing or braced shear walls required by code, unless certified by a Registered Professional Engineer.
Kevlar® Millibar® straps may be installed in shear walls in a typical crossbracing "X" or "V" pattern.

However, he was unprepared for the long months of isolation the job entailed, and quickly succumbed to "pshepherd's psychosis," wherein he would hold long meaningful conversations with his ovine charges, also engaging in head-butting contests with rams from other herds.
His analyst suggested art as a therapy, and thereafter Millibar could be seen in the fields hard at work at his easel while supervising his flock.

a dense carbon dioxide layer is not necessary (>1000 millibar).
This primitive Mars can be approximated by adding 300 to 600 millibars of carbon dioxide P CO back to the atmosphere.
Melting dry ice from the entire southern polar cap is predicted to give Mars an atmosphere on the order of 50 to 100 millibar (or 5-10 % of the Earth's atmosphere).

The height of the 500 millibar surface is lowest in the Arctic, where the lack of sunlight in winter causes it to be cold.

 700 millibar Help Page
The 700 millibar level is considered part of the midlevels of the atmosphere.
In mountain regions, or areas of higher elevation, the 700 millibar layer acts more like the lower levels..much like 850 millibars is to areas in lower elevations.
When forecasting thunderstorms, it may be important to contour the temperatures as to find areas of cold mid-level temperatures for instability, warm temperautes to inhibit convection, and cold and warm advection areas to figure out areas in which a cap may be breaking or strengthenging and if the layer is destablizing.

Millibars are outdated, but at least they were once proper units of pressure.

While the atmospheric physics of warming a planet may be simplified, the practical engineering is still daunting.
The three reservoirs of carbon dioxide on Mars - the atmosphere, the dry ice in the polar caps, and gas adsorbed in the soil - provide a positive feedback, since warming will outgas or melt this greenhouse gas, thickening the atmosphere further to trap more sunlight and thus dramatically accelerating Martian habitability.

Pressure observations are taken at very specific altitudes based on half of the sea level pressure, which is 1000 millibar.
Hence, the next observation from sea level will be at 500 millibar and the altitude is 1800 feet, then 300 millibar at and altitude of 3600 feet.
Though hurricanes are very visible on a pressure chart from sea level, they tend not to be very visible at higher altitude because hurricanes have their strongest winds at sea level, which tends to weaken with altitude.

The two jet streams forecasters are interested in at this level are the polar jet and the subtropical jet.
