Found worldwide, millipedes have segmented bodies with two pairs of legs on each of the 9 to 100 or more abdominal segments, depending on the species, and one pair on three of the four thoracic segments.
Millipedes have a hard protective layer of calcium-containing chitin (except in some small species), two simple eyes, one pair of mandibles, two short antennae, and (in most species) stink glands with secretions that repel or kill insect predators.

Millipedes (Class Diplopoda) are wormlike arthropods with cylindrical bodies that have two pairs of legs for each one of their 20 to 100 or more body segments.
Unlike their close relatives, centipedes (class Chilopoda), millipedes are not venomous and cannot cause much harm with their bite.
Since most millipedes are herbivorous, feeding on decaying vegetation, their jaws are simply not strong enough for munching on anything not already half rotten.

Millipede is a classic arcade game that was first made available by Atari back in 1982.
In Millipede you are attempting to gain as many points as possible, by shooting down your assorted enemies, and by destroying all the segments of the roaming Millipede (or as Gritchka would say "Millepede").
Millipede came in two different form factors, an upright and a cocktail table, and it was also available as a conversion kit for Kangaroo, Dig Dug, and Arabian.

The object of the game is to shoot and destroy as many objects as possible for a high point score, before the player's lives are all used up.
The Millipede changes direction when it runs into a fixed object in the playfield (mushroom, DDT bomb, or flower), or when it reaches the side boundaries of the playfield.
When a segment of the Millipede is shot, it is destroyed and a mushroom appears where that segment was shot.

Millipede has all of the qualities that made Centipede so popular and it adds even more to slow down Centipede experts.
The millipede chain is shortened by a number of pieces equal to the extra spiders, making it a bit easier to kill.
The side feed in Millipede is easier to handle than it is in Centipede for two reasons: Millipede is much more forgiving in detecting collisions with the heads, which allows you to move between them more easily, and the side feed never gets ridiculously fast, which is a nice improvement over Centipede.

The only downside with the trackball and the second multicart is that there is no way to select a game with the trackball and once you start the game, Millipede checks to see if you have a trackball or a joystick plugged in.

Apparently Atari felt the same way as Millipede was planned for all four of its game systems: 2600, 5200, 400/800, and 7800, but only the 2600 and 400/800 versions ever made it out the door.
Millipede was complete and ready to ship when Atari was sold to the Tramiels and almost all video game development was put on hold.
Although some Atari 400/800 games were still allowed to proceed (to help bolster the Atari computer line), it was decided that the 5200 was not in Atari's future.

Of these, 98 of them are original dedicated machines, 2 of them are conversions in which game circuit boards have been placed in another game cabinet, and 19 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.
Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operatos might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up.
Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector.

In the early days of primitive computer games, designers had to push their talents to the limit to create artwork based on clumps of pixels.
In Atari's Millipede, your character is no more than a little triangle that shoots out little bars at moving circles.
Sometimes cover designers took plenty of liberties with game concepts -- for example, the Atari 5200 version of the Namco arcade game Galaxian portrayed your foes as winged, armored creatures with reptilian tails, a far cry from the Space Invaders-style aliens that appeared in-game.

HSC Season 4 Week 16: Millipede - AtariAge Forums
An army of menacing millipedes - cousins to the famed Centipede - have invaded your garden patch, and you must shoot arrows at them to rid your plot of these pesky pests.
What I mean is, if you tend to leave the millipede alone and focus more on getting the spiders, beetles, etc., then you're probably going to rack up more points in each round, in which case the dragonfly wave probably won't appear until after you've exceeded 50,000.
While I like Millipede over Centipede, I feel that Centipede is much closer to the original than Defender is. I also feel that Centipede 2600 is one of the better translations of the game.
