Atari develops, publishes and distributes games for all major video game consoles, as well as for the personal computer, and is currently one of the largest third-party publishers of video games in the United States.
The original Atari was a pioneer in arcade games, home video game consoles, and personal computers, and its dominance in those areas made it the major force in the computer entertainment industry from the 1970s to the mid-1980s.
Atari CEO Ray Kassar was furious, as Atari owned the rights to publish Donkey Kong for computers, and he accused Nintendo of double dealing with the Donkey Kong license.

Millipede is one of those titles which is lacking in the graphics department, but absolutely shines in terms of gameplay.
Atari, being in the business of publishing arcade games, had the advantage of porting them to the 2600 with no worry of negotiating for licensing fees and such rot.
Millipede put the player in control of a “base” charged with the duty of blasting the heck out of an advancing millipede and a garden full of spiders, fleas and other pests.

Apparently Atari felt the same way as Millipede was planned for all four of its game systems: 2600, 5200, 400/800, and 7800, but only the 2600 and 400/800 versions ever made it out the door.
However Atari made a few tweaks to the computer AI and added "Swarm Stages" to prevent players from using the same strategies they used in Centipede (such as the mushroom fort) that allowed them to play for hours at a time.
Millipede was complete and ready to ship when Atari was sold to the Tramiels and almost all video game development was put on hold.

Atari Anthology almost exclusively represents the early days of gaming before the great crash of 1983/1984 (there are a handful of later Atari 2600 games), known to collectors as The Golden Age of Video Gaming.
Atari Anthology’s interface is better looking to the eye, but somehow I think Activision Anthology’s retro-gaming-area alphabetical menu worked a bit better for such a large number of games.
Atari Anthology is also the first console software package to offer these games since they originally appeared on the 2600, so in a way it represents history itself.

Granted, many of the top-selling Atari-published 2600 titles during its heyday were licensed properties that would have had to have been repurchased for their inclusion: Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Superman, Berzerk, Jungle Hunt, and countless other truly classic games made for the Atari VCS had to be left out for this compilation.
