The Mills is a classic design; a grooved cast iron 'pineapple' with a central striker held by a close hand lever and secured with a pin.

The Mills Bomb was the first grenade that had a central spring-loaded firing-pin and and spring-loaded lever locked by a pin.
Actually referred to officially as 'No. 5', the Mills bomb was introduced in May 1915 and became the dominant British grenade for the remainder of the war.
