Club cricket is an imperfect nursery for the professional game, and those youngsters who do come through swiftly become enmeshed in a structure that cultivates tenured mediocrity.
At Milnrow, a club on the outskirts of Rochdale, two miles from the Yorkshire border, the game against Unsworth was swiftly abandoned so that everybody could get to the bar and tell tales of the deeds they would have performed.
English cricketers are constantly told they are too soft, that players pick up wages for aspiring only to mediocrity, and when Leicestershire supply unanswerable evidence that one club at least are fighting the good fight, they are greeted with public indifference.

HEYWOOD Cricket Club’s presentation evening on Saturday gave players, parents and supporters the chance to relive the exploits and acknowledge the achievements of a record-breaking season.
The junior managers praised the attitude and effort of their players and the contribution of parents, but as the club seeks to ensure the youngsters continue to develop in a safe environment, more help would be welcome on the coaching and administrative fronts.
The club’s volunteers were acknowledged with special mention to the groundstaff, including Rick Purser, Roger Smethurst and Keith Warren, the catering committee headed by Lindsay Shaw and Christine Cross, chairman of selectors, Chris Heywood, and the ‘Clubman of the Year’, Mick Webb for his tremendous work in renovating the showers.

MILNROW Cricket Club have signed New Zealand Test player Paul Wiseman as their professional for this summer.
Club official Kevin Griffiths said: “He is more known for his bowling than his batting, but he will be joining us as an all-rounder.
The club initially moved for Craig McMillan and were actually on the verge of signing him, but his NZ cricket board wanted him to play in at least county cricket if he came to England this year.

However, despite having a young and inexperienced team, Milnrow reached the final of the Wood Cup in 2003, losing to Heywood.

Milnrow's wickets began to tumble and when their Pro went in his 40's there was little left to come from the Milnrow lads falling to 95 all out.

Her latest event at Milnrow Cricket Club held last weekend has finally tipped Elsie over her half a century target and she has now raised a wonderful £51,470.
Elsie, a retired driving instructor from Milnrow, was treated for breast cancer at the Christie in the late 1980s.
As well as holding a dance and a cabaret evening at Milnrow Cricket Club, Elsie and Barbara took part in sponsored walks and received the proceeds from crown green bowls competitions throughout the area.
