The founder of the town of Milton and proprietor of the Milton House, Joseph Goodrich, was a Seventh-Day Baptist, one of many to leave the "Burned-over District' in western New York to settle in Wisconsin, taking the reform movement and its ideals westward.
The Milton House is eligible under National Historic Landmarks Criterion I for its association with the abolitionist reform movement as represented by Joseph Goodrich, and as a link in the informally-organized network known as the Underground Railroad.
Milton's Seventh Day Baptist Church was formally organized in 1840 by Joseph Goodrich, although its membership had been meeting in the Goodrich home since their arrival in Milton from New York in 1839.
