Milton Abbey lies tucked away in an idyllic part of the country, amongst beautiful rolling hills in the heart of Dorset.
A new abbey church was soon begun; although never fully completed, it reached its present size principally under the guidance of Abbot William Middleton at the turn of the 15th century.
Building at the abbey continued until its six centuries of monasticism came to an abrupt halt with the dissolution of the monastries in 1539.

 Milton Abbas
Milton Abbas, or Abbot, is said to derive its name (which is a contraction of Middleton Abbot) from its situation near the centre of the county.
The buildings of the abbey were preserved for a long time, but were gradually pulled down, chiefly to be replaced by more modern erections.
It consists of the choir, transepts, and tower of the old abbey church : the choir is chiefly of early decorated character, the transepts and tower perpendicular.

In 1771, to make way for a new house, Joseph Damer, Earl of Dorchester demolished the remaining abbey buildings, keeping only part of the church as a private chapel, and moved the surrounding village (creating Milton Abbas in the process) in 1780.
