John Prescott, the Deputy Prime Minister, is to impose 211,000 new homes on Milton Keynes and the South Midlands over the next 16 years, partly to alleviate the shortage of houses in London and the South-East.
Some 65,000 more homes than are needed to house the local population will be built in Milton Keynes, Northamptonshire, and parts of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, one of four designated growth areas for housing.
The homes are being imposed on local planning authorities under the Milton Keynes and South Midlands sub-regional strategy - the first of its kind under new planning rules - giving elected councils little choice but to make land available.
