Pacific Affairs: Book reviews -- Sihanouk: Prince of Light, Prince of Darkness by Milton Osborne   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-08)
What Milton Osborne actually presents us with in this thoughful and revealing book is a leader whose flaws of character contributed in no small measure to his country's tragic history.
Osborne is particularly good in bringing out the ambiguities of Sihanouk's policies and the ambivalence of his own position as princely commoner, populist autocrat, and conservative friend of revolutionary regimes.
For Osborne the "darker side" of Sihanouk's character mainly centres on his propensity to resort to violence against his enemies and his destructive determination to have his own way.

 BOOK REVIEW OF SPRING 2001
Osborne's considerable quest is to lead us through two millennia of exploration, discovery, livelihoods, war, and development that have marked the river's course.
The expedition, which Osborne covers in colorful detail, was led by Ernest Doudart de Lagr¨¦e and his feisty second-in-command, Francis Garnier, and although doomed from the start-plagued by inadequate preparation, serious illness, and its members' seemingly endless penchant for squabbling-it began a series of attempts by various parties to find a way around the falls.
Milton Osborne's book is a welcome addition on a subject that has been surprisingly neglected.

The Mekong: Turbulent past, uncertain future (Milton Osborne)
Osborne touches on the earlier history of the region, on settlement in the Mekong delta and the Angkor empire, but soon comes to the colonial period.
Here his primary interest is in exploration rather than broader history: he devotes forty five pages to the 1866-68 Mekong Expedition (the subject of an earlier book River Road to China) and almost as much again to attempts to navigate the Mekong, especially the problems posed by the Khone Falls.
Osborne sketches the dangers (known and potential) to the ecology of the river posed by Chinese dams on the Mekong itself and by Thai and Laotian dams on Mekong tributaries (oddly there is no mention of Vietnamese dams on the Se San).

Sihanouk: Prince of Light, Prince of Darkness by Milton E. Osborne, ISBN 0824816390 And Ray Charles: Voice of Soul
In 1941 Norodom Sihanouk ascended the Cambodian throne, supported by the French with the intent that he be their puppet king.
Milton Osborne traces the complete background leading to this event, and then follows Sihanouk's remarkable growth to political maturity: his transformation from a dilettante king to a vigorous and sometimes ruthless politician.
In the 1990s Norodom Sihanouk emerged from exile to take an increasingly active role in the new leadership of his country, culminating in 1993 with his ascension, once more, to the Cambodian throne.

River Road to China (Milton Osborne) - book review
In 1866-68 a small group of French explorers led by Lagrée and Garnier — men who deserve to be as famous as Livingstone and Burton — traveled all the way up the Mekong to the Chinese province of Yunnan, in one of the epic feats of nineteenth century exploration.
Milton Osborne sets their journey, and Garnier's later involvement in Tonkin, in its historical context and also hints at some of the later controversy surrounding the expedition, but River Road to China is basically a grand tale of adventure.
I found it really intriguing: the whole story was new to me, as I suspect it will be to most English-speaking readers.
