Milwaukee is home to a lot of nice historic architecture, but they've managed to defile their downtown with some horrible exercises in postmodernism during the 1980's and 90's.
But now, Milwaukee is finally home to some world-class modern architecture in the form of the new addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum on the lakefront, designed by renown Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
The 1957 Milwaukee War Memorial building, designed by Eero Saarinen and a nice piece of modern architecture in its own right, housed the Milwaukee Art Museum on its lower levels.

The MAM project features the new Santiago Calatrava designed Quadracci pavilion, renovated and reinstalled galleries in existing Museum buildings designed by Eero Saarinen (1957) and David Kahler (1975), and an elegant network of gardens, hedges, plazas and fountains designed by landscape architect Dan Kiley.
The Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM) commissioned Santiago Calatrava to design a 58,000 square foot addition to the Museum in 1994.
Among the many maritime elements in Calatrava's design are: movable steel louvers inspired by the wings of a bird; a cabled pedestrian bridge with a soaring mast inspired by the form os a sailboat and a curving single-storey galleria reminiscent of a wave.

The Milwaukee Art Museum's gravity-defying Calatrava addition has won top honors from the nation's oldest engineering society, edging out the cleanup of the World Trade Center in Manhattan and the rebuilding of the Pentagon, both targets of terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
Projects were judged on criteria such as resourcefulness in problem-solving, community contribution, pioneering use of materials and methods, construction innovations, impact on the physical environment and aesthetics.
Two of the judges, Judith Nitsch and Gerry Schwartz, said the art museum expansion was at the top of virtually everyone's list from the beginning.
