It was acquired by the County in 1937 and operated under the Park Commission until 1981 when it became an independent department.

Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker wants an animal-themed water park at the Milwaukee County Zoo and is pushing a consolidation of the operations of four downtown entertainment and convention facilities.
The zoo budget ended last year in the red, and "free" admissions through the private Zoological Society have cut into overall zoo revenue, county officials have said.

The Milwaukee County Zoo is losing more than a third of its felines - including two cougars named Colleen and Rocky - because of renovations to its lion house.
However, once the renovations are complete, the zoo plans to replace a lion and a jaguar that died last year with at least two new lions and two new jaguars.

We drove up to visit some friends who moved near Milwaukee in early March and we wanted to do something outdoors that our kids could enjoy.
The seal/sea lion show was shut down for the winter and many animals were indoors in their prison-like cages rather than outside in the slightly nicer displays.
I love the milwaukee zoo,especially the big cats.I have been to alot of zoo's,but you are the best zoo ever.I try to get there to see it as much as I can.I guess I'm just a big kid at heart.Keep up the great work.

In an appeal to Milwaukee County Zoo visitors to stop throwing objects into exhibits, bird curator Kim Smith on Thursday said coins had killed two of the zoo's rarest birds and had damaged the internationally important captive breeding program for Humboldt penguins.
Despite signs outside the Humboldt penguin display at the Milwaukee County Zoo, visitors sometimes still toss coins into the exhibit, zoo officials say.
Several birds at the zoo have been injured and died from ingesting coins.

So, just for the record I have been to the San Diego Zoo and although I found it nice, I honestly believe that the Milwaukee County Zoo is better.
The staff at the Milwaukee County Zoo is really friendly and the administration is very proactive.
A lot of what makes this zoo so terrific is that they've made the habitats fun for the animals, so you really get a days worth of entertainment for a very small admission fee.
