Mime artist - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Miming is to be distinguished from silent comedy, in which the artist is a seamless character in a film or sketch.
Mime supposedly began in the Theater of Dionysus in Athens, perhaps as far back as the third century B.C.E. These mimes were not entirely silent, as we think of mimes today, but the spoken element was minimized.
However, when mimes are portrayed in film, it is just as common for filmmakers to have actors with little mime training to perform a stereotype of a mime as it is for a skilled artist to either perform or choreograph the performance on screen.

The Evolution of Mime: Towards Expansiveness of Being
Since my first encounter with Mime, Etienne Decroux, and Maximilien Decroux in Paris, 1958; and as a practicing mime - a way of life and living, I would like to pour out some of the thoughts, and results of experience, in order to share this with those who are really interested in undertaking this work.
Not every white face in a town square gesticulating hopelessly is a mime; not by wearing a clown costume is one a clown; not by playing a piano tune; is one a musician, not by one brush stroke on a white paper, does one become a painter.
The concerned real student of mime, however can with dedication, devotion (that he or she invests in the study of mime without limiting the self to time or space), come to a realization of being and becoming an artist of great value.

The art of silence - interview with mime artist Marcel Marceau - Interview UNESCO Courier - Find Articles
I became a solo mime, but unlike singers, who can be listened to at any time on records or on the radio, mimes are masters of silence, soon forgotten if they don't appear on stage regularly.
Mimes are always, by definition, wordless, but they present the fable of human life on stage by means of an art that transcends words.
Unless the audience is drawn into the action, the mime has failed to get his message across the footlights, his performance is closer to mimesis than to the true art of mime.
