Topic: Mimosoideae

In the News (Sat 11 Oct 08)

  Mimosoideae
Members of this subfamily are common in lowland tropical rainforests, especially along rivers and near lakes, but have also successfully adapted to drier savannas, scrub and thorn forests, and arid desert regions in the Americas and Africa (Elias, 1981).
The classification of Mimosoideae has until recently followed closely that of Bentham (1875), who recognized five tribes based partly on aestivation of the sepals but also on androecial characters (male reproductive parts, stamens).

 Information about the Family Leguminosae
The family is usually divided into three sub-families: Papilionoideae, Caesalpinioideae and Mimosoideae.
The Mimosoideae are characterised by their small, regular (actinomorphic) flowers crowded together, generally into spikes or heads which resemble a pom-pom.
Root nodules are general in the Mimosoideae and Papilionoideae, but rarely formed in the Caesalpinioideae.

Classification and phylogeny of Acacia: a synopsis
The Mimosoideae (which is sometimes treated as a distinct family, the Mimosaceae) contains about 50–60 genera that are distributed throughout tropical, subtropical and warm-temperate regions of the world (Elias 1981 and Cowan 1998).
A cladistic analysis of the Mimosoideae based on characters of morphology, pollen, chemistry and anatomy is provided in Chappill and Maslin (1995) and cladistic analyses based on a synthesis of chloroplast DNA sequence data is provided by Luckow et al.

Corolla imbricate (descending in Papilionoideae, usually ascending in Caesalpinioideae), or valvate (Mimosoideae), or with open aestivation (occasionally); white, or yellow, or orange, or red, or pink, or purple, or blue; or some members persistent (e.g.
Stamens (1–)9–10, or 10–50 (often ‘many’ in Mimosoideae); reduced in number relative to the adjacent perianth (rarely), or isomerous with the perianth, or diplostemonous (commonly, more or less), or triplostemonous to polystemonous (mainly confined to Mimosoideae).

 CHAPTER 43. LEGUMINOSAE
Although several species within Caesalpinoideae and Mimosoideae provide useful products, the Papilionoideae (also described as Fabaceae, Faboideae, Lotoideae, or Papilionatae) is the most useful tribe to man and provides a very large number of important crop plants.
In contrast most authorities consider that seeds of the Caesalpinoideae and the Mimosoideae do not possess a strophiolar region; and accordingly percussion treatments are generally ineffective.
Thus the treatment which might be applied to render hardseeded accessions permeable may be dependent upon the tribe to which it belongs.
