MinGW - EAthena   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
MinGW is often used together with MSYS (Minimal SYStem), another package based on Cygwin that provides a lightweight shell environment supporting enough POSIX functionality to enable configure scripts to run.
Unlike Cygwin, MinGW does not require a compatibility layer DLL and its runtime is licensed as a permissive license.
The combination of MinGW and MSYS provides a small, self-contained environment that can be loaded on to removable media without leaving entries in the registry or leaving files on the computer.

There is a package for the MinGW runtime, packages for GCC and other tool ports, a package for the w32api, and so forth.
The traditional method for installing MinGW was to create a directory for the installation, download the desired individual packages, and extract their contents into the installation directory (the common internal layout shared by the packages made this possible).
MinGW consists of various packages chosen by the developer to be included in a base package bundle.

The project's name changed from mingw32 to MinGW is to prevent the implication that MinGW will only works on 32 bit systems (as 64 and higher bit machines become more common, MinGW will evolve to work with them).
MSYS was created out of a long-lived desire to provide the MinGW community a Minimal SYStem, with which a configure script could be executed.
