I question the use of the word "dialect" in this and other similiar discussions.
As the Minnan Language and Mandarin Language are mutually UNintelligible, they are properly identified as distinct languages, albeit within the same language family.
Taiwanese is a dialect of Minnan, but Minnan is a completely separate and distinct language from Cantonese, Mandarin, and other Chinese languages.
