Gunma is the northwestern-most prefecture of the Kanto, and is mostly mountainous in the north, with more of the population concentrated in the southern half facing Saitama Prefecture.
On January 23, 2006, the municipalities of Gunma, Kurabuchi and Misato from Gunma District and the town of Shin from Tano District merged into the expanded city of Takasaki.
On February 20, 2006, the municipalities of Ikaho, Komochi and Onogami from Kitagunma District and the villages of Akagi and Kitatachibana from Seta District merged into the expanded city of Shibukawa.

Minakami, Gunma -- A wind-resistant cable car has been built on Mount Tanigawa here, to replace an aging one.
The new line, which extends from Doaiguchi Station, a 746-meter-high area on the mountain in Minakami, to Tenjindaira Station, a 1,319-meter-high section, was built next to the old one that was constructed 45 years ago.
The travel time between the two stations is seven minutes.

There are many Onsen resorts nearby even Minakami is full.
It is best to go there by car, but train and bus are also available.

We are in Ota city, Gunma at the moment.
We arrived in Minakami, Gunma prefecture, in the early afternoon, and had a relaxing onsen and a well deserved icecream in town.
She was the one who kept things light when we got a bit too serious, by making up weird songs (including the team song the Jitensha song, which could very well become a number one hit on jpop), encouraging group showers as a way of team building, and just, well, being Daniela-like.

MINAKAMI, Gunma -- Prefectural police recovered the body of a rock climber who fatally plunged 300 meters off a cliff on a mountain here Saturday morning, police officials said.
At around 7:10 a.m., Gunma Prefectural Police received an emergency call saying that a climber fell off a cliff on Mount Tanigawa in the Yubiso district of Minakami.
Prefectural police dispatched a helicopter and rescue workers to the mountain and recovered the body of a man 300 meters below at around 11 a.m., police said.

As you walk along the ridge, appreciate the fact that your left foot is in Niigata and your right foot is in Gunma.
There are five baths there: three mixed (yep, co-ed); one for ladies only; and one for a pair of bears that hang out in the area.
BY CAR: Take route 17 north toward Minakami, turn right on route 291 toward Minakami and head further north for a long while; you will eventually see blue road signs leading you to Tanigawa-dake.

There are nine ski stations in the Minakami area, all relatively at a close range from Minakami Interchange (Minakami I.C.).
The are several ski stations in the Numata area, easily accessible from Numata Interchange (Numata I.C.), that we recommend.
Please also be advised that you should always bring your chains when entering in the area as this is already Niigata Prefecture, which enjoys much severe snow conditions than Gunma.

The name of the area is Minakami (two small vertical kanji on the lower left of the board, "Water" and "Up").
This particular place is called Hou-dai-ki (I hope I got it right), which literally translated by me means Treasure Grove.
I just got back from skiing in Minakami in Gunma.

Part of Naeba did eventually open later in the day but there were very few people braving the conditions - with similar conditions at most resorts in the area.
Local trains are still not running from Minakami in Gunma to north of Yuzawa because of the derailed train from yesterday.
For those of you who are metrically challenged, 306 cm is 10 feet of snow.
