Major Counselor Minamoto no Hikaru [845-913] shall be promoted to minister of the right, and offerings shall be made to placate the spirits of our ancestors.
A few critics have suggested that his lamentations over his unhappy fate were unwarranted, for as supernumerary governor general, his salary should have been generous, and in addition, Dazaifu should have been an agreeable place to live, a sophisticated center for foreign diplomacy and local administration.
No mention was made of Michizane, but at the time the court was dominated by Fujiwara no Tadahira (880-894), another of Tokihiras brothers, who is said to have maintained close ties with Michizane.

Prints on the Theme of Raiko and the Ground Spider
Raiko is shown here, as in most such prints, with a yamai hachimaki, a strip of purple cloth bound around his forehead.
In this light the Ground Spider and his demons are to be seen as representing the spirit of popular revolt, while the sick Raiko is the ineffectual Shogun, and the warriors represent hard-hearted ministers and the Chief Censor.
An amusing detail of prints on this subject is that the players are shown as being so engrossed in their game that the goblins seem no more than a trivial nuisance, hardly worse than those kibitzers in a go club who keep breathing down your neck while they point out your mistakes.
