Minas Morgul - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Minas Ithil suffered greatly as a result of the Great Plague in the year T.A. Its population and garrison were diminished, and the watch on Mordor inevitably became lax.
In response, Minas Anor was likewise renamed Minas Tirith, "The Tower of Guard," to indicate Gondor's eternal vigilance against the threat of the Witch-King.
During the War of the Ring, Minas Morgul continued to act as the base of operations for the Witch-king and was a major garrison and foward base for Sauron's forces.

After the War of the Ring and the passing of Sauron it was the duty of the new appointed Steward Faramir to clear Minas Morgul of the dread and horror that still lurked in the city.

The city itself, though, was much older - as Minas Ithil, it had stood since the late Second Age, and was some 2,100 years old when it was renamed.

Mardil had the difficult task of restraining Eärnur's urge to fight the Witch-king of Angmar, the chief of the Ringwraiths, who accused Eärnur after the Battle of Fornost of being afraid to fight him.
The King of Minas Morgul (one of the titles of the Ringwraith) reminded Eärnur of this and challenged him at the start of his reign (T.A. Although Eärnur wanted to fight the King of Morgul he was restrained with difficulty by Mardil.
It was soon learned that Eärnur had met certain death at Minas Morgul, and upon Mardil's death in T.A. 2080, his son Eradan succeeded him as the second Ruling Steward of Gondor.

As far as Minas Morgul et all looking Gondorian, I think that's one of those things that would just confuse the average movie-goer and it's more important they look evil and intimidating than strictly true to the book.
Minas Morgul in architectural style looks like Orthanc...which fits well because both of them were built in the early years of Gondor and were built as fortresses and outposts, not towns.
Your probabley right about Minas Morgul aswell, getting across that it was evil was the more important point plus as I said I don't think the fact it was gondorian was ever mentioned in the films.

 Mordor... the Land of Shadow
Sauron's stroke was mistimed, for he was not yet strong enough to capture Osgiliath, Gondor's capital, and this gave Elendil the time to forge a military alliance with his friend Gil-galad, the last High King of the Noldor.
This was in the year 2000, twenty years after their return, and Minas Ithil withstood a two-year siege before it fell.
After its capture, Minas Ithil was renamed Minas Morgul, the Tower of Sorcery, and so the ancient dwelling of Isildur became a dark place and a threat to the Gondorians who had built it two thousand years before.

Sideshow Weta Minas Morgul pictures and review
For the uninitiated, this Minas Morgul environment replica comes from Sideshow Weta as a companion to the Minas Tirith piece included in the The Return of the King gift sets.
In comparison, it isn't as astoundingly detailed as Minas Tirith, but much of this is dictated by the style of architecture which is dominated by large, bold shapes, greatly contrasting complex 'anthill' design of the White City.
We never get to see Minas Morgul in great detail in the films(and certainly not in clear light), so it is a great joy to be able to see MM for yourself and discover little details that you hadn't noticed before.
