Lego Mindstorms - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lego Mindstorms is a line of Lego Group products combining programmable bricks with electric motors, sensors, Lego bricks, and Lego Technic pieces (such as gears, axles, beams, and pneumatic parts) to build robots and other automated or interactive systems.
Lego Mindstorms may be used to build a model of an embedded system with computer-controlled electromechanical parts.
The original Mindstorms RIS was released in 1998.

 Lego Mindstorms: What Went Wrong?
Lego launched the Lego Mindstorms line of programmable toy brick construction sets with a lot of fanfare back in the fall of 1998, but in recent years the company has lost all enthusiasm for the Mindstorms line.
Mindstorms sets are generic: the typical Technic set is designed to assemble into one specific model, but this is not so with the Mindstorms sets.
The Mindstorms line was Lego's attempt at achieving substantial revenue growth by broadening its customer base to include older children and adults; however, Lego ended up selling the Mindstorms sets primarily to its existing customers.

 Expanded MindStorms FAQ at MROB
The LEGO®; MindStorms family of products consists of a kit (9719 Mindstorms Robotics Invention System) currently available in the United States for $200, and a series of add-on kits and accessories, which together can be used to build a wide variety of simple autonomous robots.
MindStorms users building robots generally limit themselves to the Technic line, which is oriented towards older children and includes gears and axles for building mechanical models, like cars with working steering wheels and the like.
With the standard Mindstorms package, you get two motors, so your choices are fairly limited to a robot that can manuver and use sensors, or a robot that sits still and can move pieces around a fixed base.
