Located in westernmost part of the main island of Honshu, Yamaguchi shares a border with Shimane and Hiroshima prefectures in the east and is surrounded on the other three sides by the sea, The Japan Sea in the north and west and the Seto Inland Sea to the south.
Yamaguchi and the island of Kyushu are connected by both a bridge and a tunnel from Shimonoseki.
Yamaguchi Ken is famous across Japan for Fugu (puffer fish) cuisine, The Kintaikyo bridge in Iwakuni, Hagiyaki pottery, Ouchi-nuri laquerware and Ouchi family dolls.

(Kyodo) _ A South Korean government delegation began preliminary investigations Friday into a 1942 undersea coal mine accident in Japan's Yamaguchi Prefecture that killed about 130 Korean forced laborers.
It is the first probe by Seoul in Japan based on a law enacted in 2004 to investigate cases of Koreans who were forcibly taken to Japan when the Korean Peninsula was colonized from 1910 to 1945 and to locate the remains of the victims, according to the South Korean Embassy in Tokyo.
