  Lead Mining in Mineral Point - Historic Sites of the Wisconsin Historical Society
Early prospectors continued digging for ore embedded near the surface in the cracks and crevices of limestone bedrock.
Lead-mining frenzy gripped the region, and the landscape suffered — oak trees fell for use as fuel in smelters; soil eroded; streams and rivers filled with sediment and contaminants from mine tailings.
Still, mining made Mineral Point a thriving commercial center that housed one of Michigan Territory's first land offices and served as a territorial county seat.

Mineral Point is where Wisconsin began during the 1820s, when prospectors were swarming over the hills of Southwestern Wisconsin looking for lead.
Built by local stonemason John Toay and Phillip Allen in 1856, the Mineral Point Railroad Depot was constructed of local limestone and is recognized as the oldest surviving railroad depot in the state of Wisconsin.
Mineral Point's railroad was eventually purchased by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway in 1880.

Founded in 1939 to prevent the destruction of Orchard Lawn, the Italianate home built in 1868 by Joseph Gundry, the MPHS is an important resource for historians, genealogists, and anyone interested in the past, present, or future of the Mineral Point area.
A private, non-profit organization, the Mineral Point Historical Society thrives because of the generous donations of time and money by members and because of the continuing commitment of volunteers.

Mineral Point soon had a zinc oxide plant, where the zinc carbonate was converted into white zinc oxide, the basic ingredient of good paint.
David Jones did come to Mineral Point, however, and a plan was "hatched" to borrow some money from David Jones' inlaws in Platteville (and probably other sources) and keep the plant operating and paying most of its' debts.
They were risking considerable wealth of their own and others in a proven failure, apparently, with only the charitable desire on their part to save a great loss to their friends and the rest of the people of Mineral Point and a hope they would eventually succeed in becoming profitable.
