Miron Cozma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His claim to fame was leading the miners of the Jiu Valley during the 1991 riots (the Mineriad) which overthrew the reformist Petre Roman government.
Cozma is a very controversial character; apart from the mineriads, he has been involved in several acts of hooliganism and at least one road accident, but no charges were pressed against him.
In September 2005, he was condemned by the Romanian Supreme Court to a 10-year term for the January 1999 Mineriad, nevertheless all his sentences were overlapped, so as of June 2006 he has still to serve a 13-month concurrent sentence in prison.

Iliescu himself came to be seen as hostile to a proper civic society, and more committed to a revised version of democratic centralism.
Under the pressure of the events that led to the Mineriads, his political stance has veered with time: from a proponent of the Perestroika, Iliescu became a neophyte social democrat, alligning himself with the Western European political spectrum.
The main debate around the subject of his commitment to such ideals is linked to the special conditions in Romania, and especially to the strong nationalist and autarkic attitude visible within the Ceauşescu regime.

Controversial Moves by Romanian President Before Exit - Worldpress.org
Objections to the controversial amnesty decree arose as soon as it was issued, and likely led the President to his change of heart.
In his opinion, the fact that Iliescu offered such an important medal to C.V Tudor is a sign that democracy is an empty concept for Iliescu, who remains “the same old Bolshevik, influenced by the taints of his communist past.” Moreover, the amnesty of Cozma proves that President Iliescu was indebted to him.
These groups contend that such a gesture represents a form of complicity to the crimes that happened during the several waves of the Mineriads and shows support for Cozma's attempt to destabilize the young democracy in the 1990s.
