 Republic of Georgia
As is known, at the end of the 15th century, the unified Georgian state disintegrated into four independent states: the Kingdoms of Kartli, Kakheti, and Imereti and the Principality of Samtskhe, Abkhazia was part of the Kingdom of Imereti.
Abkhazian was within the Principality of Samegrelo (Odishi), and in the 17th century it (Abkhazia) constituted itself as a separate principality headed by the Shervashidzes.
At the end of the 17th century, the Abkhaziaan princes seized the part of Samegrelo lying between the Kodori and the Inguri rivers, annexing it to the Principality of Abkhazia.

At the time of the last Soviet census in 1989 it had a population of around 500,000, of whom 48% were Georgians (principally from Mingrelia) and only 17% of whom were native Abkhazians.
In 1993, a major war led to Abkhazia breaking away from Georgia, during which virtually the entire Georgian population—some 250,000 people—were displaced in what was alleged to be a campaign of ethnic cleansing.
The separatist forces quickly overran the rest of Abkhazia as the Georgian government faced a second threat, an uprising by the supporters of the deposed Zviad Gamsakhurdia in the region of Mingrelia (Samegrelo).

Samegrelo (Mingrelia), the political organization representing the eponymous west Georgian region, adopted on 29 November at its fourth congress a resolution criticizing the Georgian government's track record during its two years in power, Caucasus Press reported.
Samegrelo leader Aleksandre Chachia specifically deplored Georgia's pro-NATO orientation, which he argued only serves to antagonize Russia, which retaliates by actively seeking to prevent a solution to Georgia's conflicts.
Samegrelo also called on the government to undertake measures to improve socioeconomic conditions in the region, and to introduce the study of the Mingrelian and Svan languages at university level.

Several members of the former Supreme Council (of the time of Gamsakhurdia) and recently amnestied political prisoners came to the ombudsman’s office yesterday to tell her that the authorities had killed Akaki Eliava to provoke a revolt in the Samegrelo region and blame it on "Zviadists" in order to deal with them.
They asked Nana Devdariani, the ombudsman, to find out the whereabouts of Eliava’s three comrades-in-arms, who had accompanied him in the night of his death: Zurab Gvazava, Soso Sanaia and Ghia Zarkua, for they might provide some vital information about the circumstances of his death.
