  Mingrelians History and Cultural Relations
Mingrelians now occupy part of a region that was known by ancient Greeks and Romans as Colchis or Lazica, and by western Georgians as Egrisi.
The assimilation of Mingrelians by the Georgians, which accelerated in the nineteenth century under the impact of modernization, was completed after the Soviet annexation.
Abkhazian and Mingrelian relations in the mixed southern regions of Abkhazia were soured by the Georgianization policies of Lavrenti Beria (a native of Mingrelia) in the 1940s and 1950s.

Because the inhabitants of Gali were Mingrelians, the ethnic minority of former President Gamsakhurdia, the Abkhaz leaders were prepared to agree to the return of the displaced civilians.
Since the guerrilla forces were made up of Mingrelians, the hit squad that carried out the attack on Shevardnadze might have been a group originally trained by the Georgian secret services to attack Abkhaz targets (5), over which Tbilisi subsequently lost control.
What Mr Shevardnadze is actually facing is a resurgence of the problem of the Mingrelians, the great losers in the history of the South Caucasus.

Their lands were taken by Christian Mingrelians from across the Inguri River in Georgia, a process which continued fitfully until 1949 when Mingrelians were compulsorily moved into Abkhazia to take over the farms and houses left by the deported Pontic Greeks.
Almost all the Georgian and Mingrelian inhabitants abandoned their homes and followed the retreating Georgian forces, or were chased out by the Abkhazians and their ferocious allies as they reoccupied Sukhum.
Mingrelians had lived here since 1945, when they were resettled from western Georgia.

Beria was born a Mingrelian and not, as dim-witted but persistent neo-Nazis would later howl based on photographs and dog-eared copies of the local Klan Kronicle, a Jew.
As of 1992, at least, before many Mingrelians were driven out of Abkhazia during the civil war there, a number of Beria's kinsmen survived and testified as to their clan's ethnic background.
Mingrelians have long been looked down upon as the most backward peoples of Georgia - a distinction they shared with the Abkhaz, though little else ever was.

The case of Mingrelians and Svans in Georgia cited above is an example of this phenomenon.
Hence the Lezgi of Azerbaijan rebel against the policies of assimilation they feel threatened by; the Mingrelians of Georgia, which for a long period of time have been in a process of assimilation into a Georgian identity, suddenly recall their distinctiveness; and the Ingush and Chechens, who virtually form one people, decide to split.
Admittedly, this last case is politically motivated, as the Ingush believed that staying within Russia was necessary to achieve the aim of full territorial rehabilitation from the deportations, and the return of the Prigorodniy district, which since 1943 has been ruled by North Ossetia.

Prolonged displacement may be widening a potentially dangerous identity gap between the large numbers of displaced who are of Mingrelian (West Georgian) ancestry and the host population in other parts of Georgia.
Increasing militancy within the displaced population may be due in part to the crystallization of a shared Mingrelian identity.

 Abkhazia - History of Abkhazia
Modern Abkhazian historians maintain that large areas of the region were left uninhabited, and that many Armenians, Georgians and Russians (all Christians) subsequently migrated to Abkhazia, resettling much of the vacated territory.
According to Georgian scholars, the Abkhaz are the descendants of North Caucasian tribes (Adygey, Apsua), who migrated to Abkhazia from the north of the Caucasus Mountains and merged there with the existing Georgian population.
Either way, at the beginning of the 20th century demographics were such that in 1911 the Encyclopædia Britannica reported that in Sukhumi (population at the time 43 000), two-thirds of the population were Mingrelian and one-third were Abkhaz.

As a gesture of goodwill to the Mingrelian speakers of this region the Abkhazians instituted a new trilingual newspaper in the summer of 1995.
This attempt to do something to improve the self-pride of Mingrelians and make them aware of their distinct culture has been given no recognition in any Western comment that I have seen (and in Tbilisi it is regarded as a mere attempt to foster Mingrelian separatism).

The goal of both the Abkhazians and the Mingrelians is ultimately to reestablish the kingdoms of Colchis and Kartli, which exist on maps at the British Museum pored over by antiquities scholars who would presumably have to be trundled down to Asia Minor to do the surveying on the reconstituted empires of three millennia ago.
They also have a lost kingdom, but it's currently occupied by the Abkhazians and Mingrelians, which are in turn occupied by the Georgians, with the Russians on the way.

The Mingrelians have a small, round host weighing a little over an ounce with a square stamp, the inscription signifying: "Jesus Christ is victor." The Confession of Augsburg maintained the use of small round hosts which the Calvinists rejected under pretext that they were not bread.

The shift in the balance since 1886 between (especially) the Abkhazians and the Kartvelians (mainly Mingrelians) in the population of Abkhazia is in large measure explained by the forced immigration policy of non-Abkhazians into Abkhazia activated by (the Mingrelian) Lavrent\i Beria while he was still in charge of Transcaucasia in 1937.
It is natural that he accepted the call to return home, for after his resignation and the course of events taken in Moscow, there was never likely to be any other role for him to play on the world\s stage, and this most chameleon of politicians was never anything if not ambitious.
The situation is complicated by the Gamsakhurdia factor, as some of his Mingrelian supporters had kidnapped and secreted in the totally mingrelianised Abkhazian province of Gali two of Shevardnadze\s ministers.
