Mingulay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mingulay (Scottish Gaelic: Miughalaigh or Miùghlaigh) is the largest of the Bishop's Isles in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.
It has been uninhabited since 1912 and is known for its large seabird population, including puffins, guillemots, kittiwakes, shags, fulmar and razorbills.
Also associated with the island is the Mingulay Boat Song, although it was composed in 1938, after the abandonment of Mingulay.

Rambles: Ben Buxton, Mingulay: An Island & its People
Mingulay, often regarded as "the nearer St. Kilda," is the last but one island at the southern end of the Hebrides -- its population at its highest was 160.
The abandonment of the island was an inevitable event, exacerbated by the lack of proper boat landing or anchorage; Mingulay is an inhospitable island, surrounded by harsh seas and dangerous currents.
Mingulay village is a crumbling ruin of crofts, with the sands encroaching on the remainder of the buildings.

The meeting of two sea currents at Barra head, at the South end of Berneray, gives a rich food supply for fish, which are preyed on by the breeding fulmars, puffins, kittiwakes, razorbills and guillemots.
Mingulay, which also has impressive seabird colonies, was settled early and was inhabited until 1908, when most of its residents went to Vatersay: the ruins of the village and school can still be seen at the head of the bay.

Once owned by the MacNeil's of Barra, the island of Mingulay (Gael: Miughalaigh is the largest of the small group of islands in the Outer Hebrides known as the Bishop's Isles.
Mingulay has a long history of settlement with many archaeological sites in evidence, but its population rapidly declined from a total of 140 inhabitants in 1901 to two in the 1930s, the majority evacuated 1910-2.
Two buildings still stand: the Schoolhouse, which was built in the 1880s by the Free Church Ladies' Association and later used as a sheep farmer's bothy; and the Chapel House, a Catholic priest's house built in 1898.

Mingulay is a particularly beautiful but very remote and rocky island.
Mingulay has been uninhabited since 1912 and the story of the island is a bit like the story of the island of St. Kilda, although much less well known.
Isolation, absentee landlords, and insufficient fertile land, all contributed to the evacuation of the island.

 Makem Discussion
The Mingulay Boat Song was requested at a session on the cruise, a song that hadn't been sung much lately.
I was just looking for clarification on that because it was my understanding that they, in fact, had changed it officially to the makem and spain brothers because the spains were mistakenly being promoted as special guests.
As far as Mingulay goes, it's just a song that you don't hear much anymore and now it seems to be making a comeback and that definately happened to us on the cruise as it was well received.
