Ferdinand Marcos was born in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte to Mariano Marcos, a lawyer, and Josefa Edralin, a teacher.
Marcos' subsequent claims of being an important leader in the Filipino guerrilla resistance movement were a central factor in his later political success, but U.S. government archives later revealed that he actually played little or no part in anti-Japanese activities during the war.
Marcos' second term was marked by increasing civil strife known as the "First Quarter Storm." After a series of bombings in Manila claimed to have been carried out by the New People's Army of the Communist Party of the Philippines, Marcos warned of imminent Communist takeover.

The Malcolm Newell designed Mini Marcos was intended to fill the gap for a cheap GT sportscar and it was based, as the name suggests, on the Mini.
Perhaps the Mini Marcos' greatest claim to fame is the fact that it was the first Corgi 'Golden Jacks' car with removable wheels.
Marcos claim that the GTS was released onto the UK market in response to the waiting list for the Lotus Elise, but it's hard to see Elise buyers being the natural candidates for the GTS as it is much more refined, but less no-compromise road racer than the Lotus and it is around £9,000 more!

Other Marcos models produced were the GT, Mini Jem and Mini Marcos in the early days, and latterly the Mantis and Mantula.
Mini Marcos Originally built and designed by Dizzy Addicot as the aluminium bodied Dart, (which also inspired the similar Mini Jem) it proved too costly for production.

One of their early projects was the Mini Marcos, a car that was quite similar to the Mini Jem.
In 1969, the Mini Jem project was sold to Robin Statham, who improved the body in detail and started to market assembled "turn-key" cars as well as better appointed, painted and trimmed, body shells that only needed a set of running gear to be road-worthy.
Don's Mini Jem has taken its class at Palm Springs, San Diego and won the Index of Performance award for Sports and GT cars under 3-litres as well at The La Carrera Classic in 1988.

Subsequently the Mini Marcos earned its spurs and reputation on the track, especially at Le Mans in 1966 when it was the only British car to complete the 24 hour race.
Throughout this time the Marcos GT remained a solid success but was still hindered by the labour-intensive wooden chassis 1969 the Adams brothers were commissioned to design a steel chassis which appeared in the form of a square section tubular space frame that cut some 15 hours off the manufacturing time of every car.

Although the Fang was not strictly a Mini special, it still qualifies as a classic to be sought after by Mini enthusiasts due to the use of familiar components and limited numbers.
The Marcos had a similar design philosophy to the Jem, which we featured in an earlier issue, the body/chassis unit was a monocoque structure with wood and metal sections bonded into critical areas to give immense strength to the shell.
The Mini Marcos is recognised as one of the best kit cars using Mini bits and it would be good to see some of these finished to a high standard to take their place in Mini history.

This car is the most successful Mini Marcos ever built and because of the championship starts-to-wins ratio, it is one of the most successful sports racing cars ever built.
Marcos XP More recently Pete Crudington’s Granny Smith Racing Mini Marcos Mk IV, driven by Ollie Howell, won the ‘Fastest Mini in the World’ title at Silverstone in August 2004.

Every type of Mini and Mini derivative assembled for the Mini equivalent of the Teddy Bears Picnic near Charlsbury.

Steven started racing in 1974 at Castle Comb, with the Mini Marcos, and over the next 6 years won 35 races with 37 seconds and thirds from 95 starts.

I always reckoned the Mini Marcos was a beautiful car until I saw one in the flesh, as the Corgi model has a grace and balance which the real thing sadly lacks - Perhaps Jem should've drafted in Corgi's draftsmen...
The Marcos Mantis 2+2 was modeled as model no 312 in 1:43 scale in August 1971.
It came in maroon (roughly the same colour as the Mini Marcos) and had opening doors and silver plated headlights.
