Mini35 Digital Image Converter shown mounted on the Canon XL1/XL1S, shown mounted to the Canon XL1S.
The Mini35 relay has its own iris to control of the amount of light through the system without affecting depth of field, giving new creative freedom not available on a standard camera setup.
The 400 Series Mini35 incorporates the following features: ground glass oscillates instead of spinning; quieter operation; simultaneous start/stop of camera and Mini35 unit; easier to maintain.

The Mini35 is an ingenious device designed and built by P+S Technik in Munich, Germany and distributed in the US by ZGC (www.zgc.com) out of New Jersey, who, incidentally, will be offering the HD100 by itself or bundled with the Mini35 at a special package price.
The setup is similar to the Canon XL series, in that a small relay with an integrated iris control mounts directly to the lens mount of the camera, rather than the large shrouded version that mounts to the front of the fixed lens of the DVX100 or the Sonys.
The Mini35 looks good on the HD100 (or is it vice versa?) and the long, low profile of the camera integrates nicely with the similar profile of the Mini.

 P+S Technik Mini35 and the JVC GY-HD100, Pt. 2
I placed our lovely model Amy (who, in the spirit of proper disclosure, is also my girlfriend!) a few feet away from a hot section of sunlight on the granite floor of the courtyard, which gave her a nice upglow.
These were taken on the 100mm lens with a bit of supplemental lighting: a passive white Flexfill on one side (just picking up the ambient daylight, not the sun); and a fl flag on the other for negative fill, which helped define the modeling on the faces.
The Canon Mini35 setup, with the additional mounting brackets for both the color and fl-and-white viewfinders in front of the carry handle, still represents the best bet for handheld shooting.

P+S Technik Mini 35 for the DVX100 review
Todd was excited for this test as he has taken the DVX100 as far as it could, as seen on Art History, and wanted to see how much farther this adapter would let him go.
You need to use alot of light to compensate shooting through the 3.8f DVX at tele, 2 stop loss on the adapter and then whatever the true stop of the Cinema lenses you are using.
Shooting at night may be tough, and given the increased size those shoulder mounted shots become a little less comfortable, but the Mini35 adapter's images are well worth those trade-offs.

And then began rumblings, and these words uttered in the street: "that which is meant to be soft, is good; yet that which is meant to be sharp, is not sharp enough".
When the XL2 was introduced, I had considered switching platforms but since each camera used on the Mini35 requires a unique optical adaptor and mounting base (generally around $2600), I felt that it was worth waiting for the next generation.
This session was primarily to examine the combination of the HD100 and the Mini35, and to create the best looking images we could within the timeframe; my personal goal was to determine whether I would consider this package viable and worthy of consideration for upcoming feature projects.

I would then weigh the options between the Mini35 adapter and a simple XL to PL mount adapter, the later is what was used in 28 days later with the XL1s.
Along with his account, others who’ve used the Mini35 in short films or commercials have all agreed that the Mini35 is a great tool, but because it has to be so closely monitored and meticulously handled, it doesn’t really afford one the same flexibility as with an XL to PL mount.
If you decide to go with the Mini35, you may want to consider renting it, though I don’t know what the rental costs are, I’m almost 99% sure it costs somewhere between 8 and 10 grand (lens not included).

The advantage here is that the Mini35 package comes with an extension/converter which lets you use an actual pro-grade 35mm lens with your DV camera.
The downside to the Mini35 is the rental costs, which can inflate your limited budget.
A low-cost alternative to the Mini35 is a consumer adapter like the Letus35 (www.letus35.com), which works with most consumer DV cameras and offers a nice, shallow depth-of-field.

There are a few websites out there that have claimed to have made one and the results have been great.
Simply put, the "mini35" works by taking an slr lens (a detachable 35mm film camera lens) and projecting the image onto a piece of ground glass.(a heavily scratched or a piece of plastic taken from an opaque video cover) You then take your dv camera and focus on this image.
My understanding is that getting everything alligned just right is the real challenge, but the DOF effect from this kind of rig looks really dramatic.

The bottom line is that no matter which of the three you favor, the Mini35 Adapter is a revolutionary device that will soon be working wonders for independent directors, DPs, and producers around the world.
Defining the depth of field is usually achieved by setting the aperture of the film lens, so by adjusting the iris on the Adapter you can control the amount of light through the system.

The G35 has more in common with P+S Technik's Mini35 than their Pro35, as it is designed to work on cameras with fixed (non-removable) lenses.
The DOF would even be greater than on the Mini35 or Pro35 if I'm not mistaken, if the G35 uses a Vistavsion (8 perf) size ground glass.
For a given ground glass surface finish the relative size of the "grain" of the glass is also reduced when re-imaged on the sensor.

The plan was to show the two wandering in the desert in a long lens shot.

Nevertheless, their product opened the door for the internet community to brainstorm and determine how their system works and how to build their own for much much less.
