What is Wargaming: A Short Primer for the Newcomer
Historical miniature wargaming is the recreation of historical battles (the Tactical level of war) through the use of a 3D terrain table over which are deployed model forests, roads, rivers and buildings as well as miniature soldiers and vehicles depicting the actual participants of the engagement.
This fact, coupled with the realization that miniature battles tend to simply require more material and space than their cardboard or computer cousins, means that miniature wargames tend to be multiple player, social affairs.
Miniature wargaming is definitely not a lazy person’s hobby, and one of the reasons is the necessity of doing one’s own historical research in order to participate.

Wargaming - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wargames, like all games, exist in a range of complexities: some are fundamentally simple (so-called "beer-and-pretzel" games), while others (generally in an attempt to increase the 'realism' of the situation) produce rule sets that may encompass a large variety of actions and/or minutae.
These first wargames were played with dice which represented "friction", or the intrusion of less than ideal circumstances during a real war (including morale, weather, the fog of war, etc.), though this was usually replaced by an umpire who used his own combat experience to determine the results.
Miniature wargaming typically involves the use of miniature plastic or metal models for the units and model scenery placed on a tabletop or floor as a playing surface.

 THE MINIATURES PAGE: Glossary
The scale of the miniatures used with any rules system (Figure Scale) seldom matches the Ground Scale in use, though this may not be obvious since the two scales are given in different terms.
Some miniatures are listed as having a scale in terms of a distance, such as 15mm or 54mm figures.
Few miniature games are strategic in nature, but miniature games could be generated by a strategic- or (more likely) operational- scale campaign game.

 Wargaming
Wargaming is the play of simulated military operations in the form of games known as war games.
Wargames, like all games, exist in a range of complexities: some are fundamentally simple (so-called "beer-and-pretzel" games), while others (generally in an attempt to increase the 'realism' of the situation) produce rule sets that may encompass a large variety of actions (so-called "monster" games).
Wargame simulations can usually be categorized according to the type of technology available to the 'armies' involved, the branch(es) of the military, the period of military history, and the unit size or map scale.

 What is Miniature Wargaming
Miniature wargames are usually turn based like chess, each player taking turns to move and attack with their units.
Depending on what the terrain a miniature is currently in it might slow down movement, increase the ability to defend, reduce the ability to attack etc. Terrain can also block movement of miniatures over the table top, or can stop units shooting at each other (assuming they are armed with missile weapons).

This scale not only manages to measure the "greatness" of a wargame, but also shows its likely appeal to the population at large, and thus indicates how popular and widely played it is/will be.
Alot of miniature wargamers will lack one of these elements, so thus the score for the "average" must be lowered to something around 1.75.

Nevertheless, the history of military wargames is such that most failures seem to occur when the results of a wargame are ignored, not when they are taken seriously.
Miniature games tend to be more social, group events than do other forms of commercial wargames which are often played solitaire.
Another reason for the survivability of miniatures was the creation in 1986 of HMGS (the Historical Miniatures Gaming Society, founded by the Chapter now known as HMGS East) which was formed to officially promote that wing of wargaming as both a legitimate adult hobby and as an alternative method for the study of military history.
