Minigun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
More technically, a minigun is an externally powered Gatling gun of rifle caliber, though the term is sometimes used more generally to refer to guns of similar rates of fire and configuration regardless of power source.
The ancestor to the modern minigun was made in the late 19th-century, when Richard J. Gatling replaced the hand crank mechanism of a rifle caliber Gatling gun with one of the relatively new electric motors.
The GE 7.62x51 mm Minigun has been used in gun pod applications by the United States and with purpose-built mounting hardware used on the aforementioned fixed wing gunship aircraft.

 Urban Dictionary: minigun
Miniguns are seldom used by military infantry forces due to their propensity to devour ammunition, as it can easily go through more ammunition than an entire squad can carry in a few minutes or less.
The M134A1 minigun is an air-cooled, belt-fed machinegun utilizing a rotary assembly of (usually six) barrels to propel 7.62x51mm bullets at extremely high cyclic rates of fire, ranging from 600 to 6000 rounds per minute, depending on adjustments made to its electrical feed system.
Logistically, the minigun is often used as a helicopter-mounted weapon, manned by a single gunner.

The minigun is indeed a deadly weapon, but the general rule is not "spray and pray"; minigun ammunition is expensive and hard to come by as a general rule.

Are miniguns as employed by the US armed forces today hardwired into the electrical systems of their helicopter so that when the engines aren't turning the guns don't work or is there some form of battery backup?

One of Commandos was armed with the distinctive weapon, a 6-barreled rotary Minigun, fed from backpack ammo box.
The electric motor was powered via cable, hidden in the actor's pants, and the actor had to carry bulletproof vest and protective mask to avoid injuries from the fast and violently ejecting empty cases.
Add some powerful batteries to power electrical drive of about 4KWt (4+ horse-power), and the bulk of the gun itself, and you'll see that even the strongest man won't be able to carry this load, less to fire it with any chance to hit, due to extremely powerful recoil.

Minigun Glitch Back? - Miniclip Forums   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The original minigun glitch meant that when you used your mingun on a certain bot setup you could just fire the gun from the start and take the other bots armour away.
If you fire your minigun at the opposing bot and the spark doesn't come from his bot, it won't do any damage.
The best way to use the minigun is in short bursts, and watch either the armour level or for the sparks and where they appear very closely.

However due to the extensive rate of fire, the shooter cannot use the Minigun in a traditional manner of centering the weapon onto the target and firing bursts.
Its recommended that instead, the Minigun should be used in a constant side-to-side motion or strafing runs across the target itself so to minimize tight clustering of the BB's directly onto a target.
Like a water hose, if the Minigun is kept on the target as it fires, the target will be well soaked with BB's but a simple quick pass is often enough to strike the target with a few BB's.

Developed by General Electric in the early 1960s, the "Vulcan" series of miniguns is available in many calibers from 5.56 mm (0.223 in) up to 25 mm (1.0 in).
The 0.30 caliber (7.62 mm) GAU-2 version was first deployed by the Air Force for use on light aircraft and helicopters, but has since been adopted by the Army, Marines and Navy for the same purposes.
The term "Vulcan" was originally the GE Project Name for the first Gatling-type electric-powered minigun and is now a slang term for all of these electric Gatling guns.

Also keep in mind that, using my firearm system where bullets do more damage, it's probably be more like 5d6 or even 6d6 (per five bullets).
