  Minimalism (music) - MSN Encarta
Minimalism (music), an influential style of musical composition during the last half of the 20th century.
The major practitioners of minimal music are American composers Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley.
Young wrote music with few pitches and with notes sustained for extended periods; his Trio in C (1958) is often cited as one of the first minimalist works.

 Minimalism - A Working Terminology
Minimal music (for the time being we shall continue to use the term as fearlessly as possible) has been variously described as "trance music" (5), "systems music" (6), "process music", "solid state music" (7), "repetitive music" and "structuralist music" (8).
Both "systems music" and "process music" are generally quite useful as descriptions; we propose to differentiate between the two, preferring the "process" term as being more applicable to the early works of the genre, where the compositions are structurally nothing more than single processes.
This features prominently in the music of Reich written in the 1970s ("Six Pianos", "Music for 18 Musicians", "Octet") and is usually achieved by dropping the lower voices of the texture to have them return with new material underneath the upper voices of the old texture, as shown in Example 12.

In the expressionist gesture the gestural subject explodes in Dionysian ecstasy; in the introvert gesture the gestural subject implodes in a blurring of its boundaries; in the minimal gesture the gestural subject is detached and minimized.

AE160D Unit 11: Introduction to Minimal Music
Leaping ahead to the evolution of modern minimalist music, beginning in the 1960's, we see the tendency towards serial music and minimal structures in the work of Robert Ashley, Laurie Anderson, Steve Reich, Phillip Glass, John Adams and Terry Riley.
While this also occurred in the music of the 19th century composers, Laurie Anderson, Steve Reich and Phillip Glass have had the opportunity to employ modern technology in their efforts to conjure up mesmerizing rhythms.
Present day minimal compositions can be recognized by their use of atmospheric sounds, such as voices and clapping, which are exploited in combination with orchestral instruments.

Minimalist music, at least originally, tended to restrict itself to a tiny repertoire of pitches and rhythmic values, like the F Dorian scale and steady 8th-notes of Philip Glass's Music in Fifths.
Moreover, minimalism borrowed its name from the eponymous art movement, and there are clear parallels between the quasi-geometric linearity and predictability of Philip Glass's and Steve Reich's notes with the clean geometric lines and simple optical illusions of a Frank Stella or Sol Lewitt.
The postminimalist composer Paul Epstein once suggested to me that music of strict processes is minimalist, while music in which the composer has altered the result of a process, following his or her own intuition, is postminimalist.

Even where minimalism has gained grudging acceptance by classical musicians, the idea that there are musical styles that have grown from minimalism is considered heresy.
Minimalism does not consist merely of the outputs of four famous composers - originally in the 1960s there were dozens of composers involved in a feverish, irascible exercise of group creativity.

There is something about so-called 'minimal' music which makes it curiously well-suited to the medium of the saxophone quartet, which probably explains why there are a large number of pieces written for this combination by composers who might be described as having a foot (or, in some cases, a toe) in the 'minimal' music pond.
Whether the medium of the saxophone quartet carries the same musical 'weight' as that of the string quartet is a moot point; we leave it for the listener to judge.
All the musical allusions are to pieces half remembered, without access to the original source, and constitute a rather nebulous or at least imprecise form of scholarship.

Minimal techno - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Minimal techno, a minimalist sub-genre of Techno music, is characterized by a stripped-down, glitchy sound, simple 4/4 beats (usually around 120-135 BPM), repetition of short loops, and subtle changes.
Musical development is achieved mostly by adding or removing instruments (sounds) on eight-bar phrase boundaries and adjusting sound effects.
By the the second half of 2006, the term 'minimal' had in many ways become contradictory, as it serves as a denominator for the tech house sounds of the moment, many of which should rather be coined as 'maximal' in terms of their sonic content, in contrast to the original stripped down, i.e.

His 1974 book on 'Experimental Music' has its last chapter on the as then still fledgling 'minimal' music movement, and he also provided the preface for Wim Mertens's book on 'American Minimal Music' (1980).

Proverb (1995), intended for the Proms and the Utrecht Early Music Festival, profits from the experience he had working on The Cave with Paul Hillier and with singers who had formed their style in medieval polyphony: based on one melodic thought, it is music of drones and rhythmically insistent counterpoint, close to Perotinus.
