Trance music is generally characterized by a tempo of between 124 and 148 bpm, featuring repeating melodic synthesizer phrases, and a musical form that builds up and down throughout a track, often crescendoing or featuring a breakdown.
Trance records are almost invariably heavily loaded with reverb and delay effects on the synth sounds, vocals and often parts of the percussion section.
Psychedelic trance, often referred to as psytrance, is a form of electronic music that developed from Goa trance in the early 1990s when it first began hitting the mainstream.

Minimalist trance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An emerging style of electronic trance music developed in the early 2000s, minimal psytrance is a form of psychedelic trance which developed as a backlash to the older and (some would argue) stale and overused sound of goa trance.
One of the first artists to create this genre was arguably Daniel Vernunft with his acclaimed Shiva Chandra identity, who continues to this day to release excellent releases under that name and as a member of the group Auricular.
In the last couple of years Australia has added its own artists and labels to the minimalist trance scene.

Psychedelic trance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Psychedelic trance, often referred to as psytrance, is a form of trance music that developed from Goa trance in the early 1990s.
The original Goa trance was often made with popular Modular synthesizers and hardware samplers, but the preference in Psychedelic trance has moved to sample manipulation and storage in VST and AU software sampler applications.
The first pure Psychedelic trance label was Dragonfly Records, formed by the artist and trance producer Martin "Youth" Glover (a former bassist for the band Killing Joke) in Brixton, London.

Trance also usually features more complicated chord progressions and melodies than were found in the music at the time, including 4 chord progressions symptomatic of 80's new wave music.
Arguably a fusion of techno and house, early trance shared much with techno in terms of the tempo and rhythmic structures but also added more melodic overtones which were appropriated from the style of house popular in Europe's club scene at that time.
The sounds used in trance tended to be produced by analog synthesizers (or recently, digital simulations of analog synthesizers, often called virtual analog synthesizers), with lush "strings" providing the basis for the melodies and pads, while similar analog equipment was used to produce basic bass notes and the regimented "four-to-the-floor" drum loops.

Trance music. A definition of genre. Trance, goa, psy, house, progressive and more...
Trance did a very promising start in the early nineties (1990's) in Europe, and is currently one of the most promising and influential music genres on the music scene.
Trance itself is very wide-scoped, it occupies a lot of territory with a lot of space and brings its influence deeply outside and well beyond its own bounds, that seem to be quite obscure.
However, the melodies in trance differed from euro/club house in that although they tended to be emotional and uplifting, they did not "bounce around" in the same way that house did.

However, not all trance fits that profile, and often times a song's classification as "trance" has just as much to do with who is playing it as what it sounds like.
This early trance tended to be characterized by the anthemic qualities described above, and typically involved a break-down portion of the song in which the beat was dropped for a few bars to focus on the melody before bringing the beat back with a renewed intensity.
Some of the artists that had helped create the trance sound in the early and mid-1990s were, by the end of the decade, branching out with more experimental work (artists of particular note here are BT and Underworld).

 Generation Trance :: Bio
Trance music is a subgenre of electronic dance music (EDM) that developed in the 1990s.
Perhaps the most ambiguous genre in the realm of electronic dance music, trance could be described as a melodic, more-or-less freeform style of music derived from a combination of techno and house.
These industrial artists were largely dissociated from rave culture, and their trance albums were generally experiments, not an attempt to start a new genre with an associated culture--they remained firmly rooted culturally in industrial and avant-garde music.

Psychedelic trance (often referred to as psy trance) is a form of trance music (a style of electronic music), developed in the late 1990s.
Psychedelic trance as a term is used very ambigiously and almost synomously with the name Goa trance.
Some for example, began to use the term psychedelic trance to distinguish the newer material made by artists which were formally known to have been Goa trance artists, but the new material by these artists was more minimalist, and less melodic.

A Brief History of Trance Elements of what would become trance music were being explored by industrial artists in the late 1980s.
By this time, trance had become synonymous with progressive house and both genres essentially subsumed each other under the commercial banner of "progressive." By the end of the 1990s, trance remained commercially huge but had fractured into an extremely diverse genre.
Many artists described as producing a very powerful trance sound have most recently released tracks more suggestive of techno; DJs known for spinning scintillating trance anthems in 1996, turn to a darker, housier sound in 2000.

The distinction from trance is a bit more problematic, as trance's rigid 4/4 obsession is basically derived from house anyway.
But trance removes the destabilising aspect of house's refracted pulse which places different emphases on different beats, instead streamlining the rhythm so that every beat is like a step forward - which produces the sensation so often associated with trance of being "on a journey".
But I think house's continual four beat climax-release grooves produce a desire in the listener to always return to that first beat and hear the measure again; in a sense, the tensions of the groove tease the listener's ear and their body with the prospect of withheld pleasures.
