Tony Killeen the communications minister said that although the EU had requested that Member states complete the transition from analogue to digital TV broadcasting by 2012 he expected the development of digital TV in Ireland to take place much quicker.
Ireland is now pushing ahead with digital TV and a two-year pilot is set to start this autumn and according to siliconrepublic.com, Ireland already has 700,000 households subscribing to digital satellite and cable/MMDS services from Sky (427,000) and UPC Ireland (formerly NTL and Chorus, with over 260,000).
Minister for Communications Noel Dempsey is quoted as saying that the service would form the first stage of a nationwide roll out of a digital terrestrial television service.

On Wednesday, Ireland's Minister for Communications Dermot Ahern said new proposals were being formulated that would allow for satellite TV providers based in other European countries to be regulated here in Ireland.
Under the Minister's new set of proposals, satellite broadcasters would come under the jurisdiction of EU member states into which they provide targeted television channels that are meant for reception only in that member state.
The Minister said that the new proposals are contained in a submission to the EU Commission on the Review of the Television Without Frontiers Directive, which is currently underway.

The Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, in consultation with An Post and RTÉ, should set targets for the number of licence fees collected, introduce a scheme of incentives and penalties for An Post relating to the rate of collection, and adjust the regulations governing the licence fee to enhance the collection rate.
The promotion of community broadcasting should be a stated policy objective of both the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources and, pending the establishment of the BAI, the BCI.
