Military, Defence, Canadian Foreign Affairs History - TWR   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
For Canada's defence industry, 1987 was dominated by on-going activity on a host of pre-white paper procurement programs (covering everything from small arms to patrol frigates), by initial examination of the short and long-term opportunities (challenges?) offered by the white paper, and by a series of pivotal export contracts.
A year of less obvious change for Canada's land forces, 1987 was marked by the award of a $19.2-million contract to Invar Manufacturing to produce TOW turrets (for the M113) under license from Thune-Eureka of Norway, and by on-going negotiations with France for the co-production of the advanced Eryx anti-armor weapon.
The low visibility of defence, which at times left the impression that the Liberals, the New Democrats and the Progressive Conservatives had signed some sort of non-aggression pact on the subject, also may have been influenced by the presence of potentially inflammable, and in some cases inconsistent, elements in their defence planks.

The Social Significance of Canada's Reserve Forces
The Militia is an esteemed Canadian institution which has, since the nation’s earliest beginnings, played a significant role in its history with citizen soldiers contributing, always unstintingly, to the defence and national security of our country.
Unlikely as it might be, Canada must be prepared to offer a strong defence in time of trouble…and recently Canada has been criticized by her allies for failing to pull its weight in international deployments.
Canada’s Militia played an important role in the recent Winnipeg flood and floods in the Saguenay, forest fires in British Columbia and Alberta, as well as the Quebec and Ontario ice storms.

In October 1911 Hughes was appointed to a political post as Minister of Militia and Defence in spite of having already established a reputation for himself as something of a religious bigot: he was especially unpopular with many French Canadians.
He boosted Canada's pre-war regular force of 3,000 with militia troops in addition to the fruits of widespread voluntary recruitment.

Military Law, the Canadian Militia, and The North-West Rebellion of 1885
Since the Canadian militia was constituted on a voluntary basis, aggrieved or dissatisfied soldiers could always leave or choose not to re-enlist at the end of their three-year engagements.
The military law which regulated the militia in Canada during the nineteenth century originated from a variety of British and Canadian sources.
In contrast to the British army, the Canadian militia generally attracted a better class of men from the general civic community; merchants, bank clerks, farmers, lawyers, students, retired soldiers, and other members of respectable society were included in its ranks.
